CSU BAKERSFIELD'S BASILE NAMED WAC PLAYER OF THE WEEK
CSU Bakersfield junior guard Dedrick Basile has been named Western Athletic Conference Men's Basketball Player of the Week for the week of Jan. 11-17. This is his first-ever WAC Player of the Week honor.
The Houston, Texas, native averaged 19.5 points on 58.3 percent shooting, to go along with 4.0 rebounds, 2.5 steals and 2.5 assists as the Roadrunners picked up a pair of road wins last week to remain unbeaten in WAC play. Basile, who entered the week averaging 10.9 points on 43.9 percent shooting, opened the week with 12 points, five rebounds, three assists and three steals in a win at Chicago State last Monday. He then scored a career-high 27 points, including a career-high five-three pointers and a team season-high 10 made field goals at Seattle U last Saturday. Basile also added three rebounds and two steals in leading CSU Bakersfield to its fifth straight win. The Roadrunners have now won four-straight road games for the first time since the 2007-08 season, their final year as a Division II program. CSUB is also 3-0 in WAC play for the first time since joining the conference in 2013.
Other nominees included: Joshua Braun of Grand Canyon finished with 34 points, five rebounds, one block and one steal in a win over Utah Valley ... NM State's Pascal Siakam averaged 15.5 points, 14.0 rebounds, 3.5 blocks and 2.0 assists as the Aggies went 2-0 on the week ... Antonio Green of UT Rio Grande Valley averaged 18.5 points, 4.0 rebounds and 4.0 assists as the Vaqueros went 2-0 last week ... Utah Valley's Konner Frey finished with 21 points and eight rebounds in a loss at Grand Canyon.
WAC STAT LEADERS
CSU Bakersfield leads the WAC in scoring defense (64.3), blocks (5.39), assists (16.22), turnover margin (1.94) and assist-turnover ratio (1.26), while NM State is tops in field goal percentage defense (39.8), rebounding (42.4), rebounding defense (31.6), rebounding margin (10.7) and defensive rebounds (29.37). Grand Canyon leads the league in scoring (80.1), scoring margin (10.3) and field goal percentage (48.0), while Utah Valley is tops in free throw percentage (71.1), three-point field goal percentage defense (30.8) and three-pointers per game (7.94). Chicago State leads the WAC in steals (8.45) and offensive rebounds (13.65), and Seattle U is tops in three-point field goal percentage (38.4).
Individually, NM State's Pascal Siakam leads the WAC in scoring (22.2), rebounding (11.9), blocked shots (2.16), offensive rebounds (4.05, defensive rebounds (7.84) and minutes per game (35.11). Grand Canyon's Joshua Braun is tops in free throw percentage (86.9) and three-point field goal percentage (46.1), while teammates Grandy Glaze and DeWayne Russell lead the WAC in field goal percentage (63.5) and assists (5.94), respectively. Chicago State's Kieran Woods is tops in steals (1.85), while CSU Bakersfield's Damiyne Durham and Brent Wrapp lead the WAC in three-pointers per game (3.06) and assist-turnover ratio (2.93), respectively.
In WAC games only, CSUB leads the league in scoring defense (60.0), scoring margin (16.3), field goal percentage (50.3), field goal percentage defense (36.8), rebounding defense (30.0) and assists (18.33), while NMSU is tops in rebounding (45.0), rebounding margin (9.2), blocks (7.0) and defensive rebounds (30.25). Chicago State leads the WAC in steals (8.75), turnover margin (3.5) and offensive rebounds (16.25), while Grand Canyon is tops in scoring (87.0), three-point field goal percentage (40.7) and assist-turnover ratio (1.96). Utah Valley leads the WAC in free throw percentage (73.4) and three-pointers per game (10.33), while Seattle U is tops in three-point field goal percentage defense (30.4).
Individually in WAC games, Braun leads the WAC in scoring (25.7), while Siakam is tops in rebounding (12.8), offensive rebounds (4.5) and defensive rebounds (8.25). NM State's Johnathon Wilkins leads the league in field goal percentage (71.4), while Russell is tops in assists (7.0) and assist-turnover ratio (4.2). UTRGV's Dakota Slaughter leads the WAC in free throw percentage (100.0), while CSUB's Dedrick Basile is tops in steals (2.67) and Grand Canyon's Matt Jackson leads the league in three-point field goal percentage (55.6). Utah Valley's Jaden Jackson is tops in three-pointers per game (4.0), while CSUB's Justin Hollins leads the WAC in blocks (3.33) and UTRGV's Antonio Green is tops in minutes per game (37.25).
NM STATE BOASTS 30-GAME WAC HOME WINNING STREAK
NM State is currently riding a 30-game WAC home winning streak, as the Aggies' last WAC home loss was on Jan. 26, 2012 to Nevada. NM State is 2-0 at the Pan American Center in WAC play this season, went 7-0 in 2014-15, 8-0 in 2013-14, 9-0 in 2012-13 and 4-0 to close out the 2011-12 season.
GRAND CANYON RANKED NO. 10 IN MID-MAJOR TOP 25
In the Jan. 18 CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Top 25, Grand Canyon was ranked No. 10. The Antelopes currently have the best RPI of all WAC teams at 103 and are riding a nine-game winning streak.
UTRGV HAS FIVE PLAYERS AVERAGING DOUBLE-DIGIT SCORING
UT Rio Grande Valley currently has five players averaging double-digit scoring - Shaquille Hines (13.8), Antonio Green (12.6), J.J. Thompson (11.9), Dakota Slaughter (11.6) and Dan Kimasa (10.5). The Vaqueros are one of only eight teams in the NCAA with five or more players averaging double-figures in scoring. The others are Iowa State (six), Hofstra, Maryland, North Florida, Siena, South Carolina and SMU. Of those teams, the Vaqueros are one of two (Hofstra) to have all five of their starters averaging double-figures in scoring and the only one with three newcomers averaging double-figures in scoring (Green, Thompson and Slaughter).
CSUB POSTS LONGEST ROAD WIN STREAK EVER AS A DIVISION I PROGRAM
CSU Bakersfield has won four-straight road games for the first time as a Division I program and for the first time since the 2007-08 season, its final year as a Division II program. The Roadrunners are also riding a five-game winning streak and are 3-0 in WAC play for the first time since joining the conference in 2013. At 13-5, CSUB has nearly matched its win total from a year ago when it went 14-19.
GRAND CANYON POSTS LONGEST WIN STREAK AT DIVISION I LEVEL
With a win over Utah Valley on Jan. 16, Grand Canyon extended its win streak to nine games. It is the Lopes' longest winning streak since transitioning to Division I. The Lopes' 99 points in regulation against the Wolverines were the most in school history at the Division I level and their 52 second-half points were the most they've scored in a half this season.
UTRGV'S GREEN TOP FRESHMAN THREE-POINT SHOOTER
UT Rio Grande Valley freshman Antonio Green currently leads the NCAA in three-point shooting by a freshman at 45.3 (43-of-95). Overall, Green ranks 22nd in the NCAA and second in the WAC.
NM STATE'S MENZIES EIGHTH ON WAC WINS CHART
With wins over Missouri-Kansas City and Chicago State last week, NM State head coach Marvin Menzies moved into a tie for eighth place on the all-time WAC victories chart with 93 wins. He also ranks third in WAC winning percentage (.715) and ninth in overall wins (186).
CSU BAKERSFIELD'S HOLLINS BREAKS SEASON BLOCKS RECORD
CSU Bakersfield junior Justin Hollins tied the all-time program single-game record with six blocked shots in only 18 minutes played at Seattle U on Jan. 16, but is the first CSUB player to do so at the Division I level. With the performance, Hollins' season total rose to 32 blocks, breaking the CSUB Division I record (31) with more than 10 games remaining in the season. As a team, the Roadrunners now have 97 blocks on the season, nine shy of the CSUB Division I single-season record.
