DENVER - Grand Canyon's Alexander Roggenkamp and Susan Baklini have been named Western Athletic Conference Tennis Players of the Week, respectively, for Jan. 11-17.
Roggenkamp, a senior from Hamburg, Germany (Gesantschule Alter Teichweg) went 4-0 against Montana State and Boise State. Roggenkamp, along with Felix Schueller picked up GCU's first victory of the day with a win on court over Montana State's Kellen Bates and Rock Sitar. He also defeated Lewis Roskilly of Boise State in a 6-3, 7-5 two-set victory.
Baklini, a junior from Albuquerque, N.M. (University of New Mexico) went 4-0 against #75 UC Irvine and UC Riverside. Baklini was key to the Lopes sweeping the Highlanders for GCU's first victory of the season. Balkini and Tatum Prudhomme capped off a perfect 2-0 weekend in doubles by defeating Karla Dulay and Tamilla Vaksman, 6-0.
Other men's nominees: Chicago State's Christian Gonzalez claimed a win at No. 4 singles in CSU's season opener at IUPUI in a three-set thriller before teaming with freshman Gabriel Niculescu to gain a win over #26 Northwestern at No. 2 doubles the following day. Seattle U's Connor Leahy earned the Redhawks' first point vs. a Pac-12 team since returning to Division I competition, defeating No. 49 Oregon's Ethan Young-Smith, 3-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-8) in the first match vs. the Ducks.
Other women's nominees: UT Rio Grande Valley's Dominique Ibarra recorded her first singles win of the season after defeating McNeese State's Hannah Brett 6-1, 6-4 at the No. 4 spot. Her singles victory was the lone point for the Vaqueros against McNeese State. In doubles, she went 1-1 after teaming with Doris Aleksvoska as they picked up a 6-0 win over Baylor's McKenna Martin and Hadley Young at the No. 3 spot.
