WAC PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
Grand Canyon's Mitch Maroscher and Seattle U's Michelle Lui have been named Western Athletic Conference Tennis Players of the Week, respectively, for Jan. 18-24.
Maroscher, a junior from Salem, Ohio (Salem) helped clinch a come from behind win over West Coast Conference foe Saint Mary's this week. After being the only doubles win with partner Adrian Legarreta, Maroscher turned the momentum around for GCU. He defeated Thomas Hunt in three sets to seal the victory for the Lopes.
Lui, a sophomore from Bellevue, Wash. (Forest Ridge School of the Sacred Heart) won both singles matches over the weekend and the Redhawks took the first point of the match in both as well, winning the doubles point in each match on the weekend … Lui and Woodman have won at No. 1 doubles in two of three matches to finish to start the spring season.
Other men's nominees: Chicago State's Rohan Wattley captured his first singles win of the dual match season on Jan. 24 at No. 4 singles against Chicago. He also teamed with freshman Felix Savard to gain a pair of wins at No. 2 doubles against UC and Illinois State. Missouri-Kansas City's Airam Castellano helped the Roos move to 2-0 on the season with a perfect weekend. He defeated one of the top NAIA players in the country in Spartak Rahachou on Friday in the season opener, coming from behind. He also posted a 2-0 mark in doubles with partner Mike Psarros in convincing fashion. UT Rio Grande Valley's Cosme Jubera went 1-1 in singles and 1-0 in doubles top open the season. He defeated UMBC's Eliot Loubatie 7-6 (3), 6-4 for his first dual match singles victory. In the second set, Jubera found himself down 0-4 before winning six straight games to take the match. In doubles, Jubera teamed with Harry Wells to defeat UMBC's Biyik Akinshemoyin and Kevin Hsieh 6-4 to give UTRGV the doubles point. Jubera and Wells remained undefeated in doubles as their match against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi went unfinished.
Other women's nominees: Chicago State's Monica Pulgar garnered her first collegiate singles victory when she captured a 6-4, 6-1 win over Chicago's Kat Stevanovich at No. 6 singles on Jan. 24 in CSU's season opener. Grand Canyon's Tatum Prudhomme continued her winning ways with a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 1 singles against Colorado State. Prudhomme and her partner, Susan Baklini were dominant in doubles as well with a 6-1 victory over Aina Hernandez and Madison Porter. Prudhomme picked up a 6-0, 6-2 win in singles and a 6-2 win in doubles against Air Force. The junior did not allow an opponent to win more than two sets this past weekend. Missouri-Kansas City's Melinda Johnson was perfect on the week, going 2-0 in singles at the No. 1 position, as well as No. 1 in doubles at the top position in the lineup. UMKC rolled to 7-0 victories in both home openers. UT Rio Grande Valley's Reegan Greenwood defeated Texas A&M-Corpus Christi's Jelena Dzinic 6-3, 2-6, 12-10 to record the Vaqueros lone point against the Islanders. Greenwood's singles victory was her 44th of her career and that moved her into a tie for seventh place in the program's all-time career singles victory list.
CHICAGO STATE
Fresh off of opening its 2016 campaign a week ago, the Chicago State men's tennis dropped a pair of matches last weekend with a 6-1 defeat at Illinois State on Jan. 23 and a 6-1 loss to NCAA Division III Chicago in its home opener at the H-F Racquet and Fitness Club on Jan. 24.
GRAND CANYON
After the Grand Canyon men's tennis team had Saturday's match against Santa Clara postponed due to weather conditions, GCU closed out the weekend in California against Saint Mary's. The Lopes were able to defeat the Gaels 5-2 for the team's first winning streak of the season.
MISSOURI-KANSAS CITY
UMKC men's tennis rolled past Baker on Friday afternoon at the KC Raquet Club in the season opener, taking every match on the way to a 7-0 score. The UMKC men's tennis squad opened the home portion of its schedule with a 2-0 record after rolling past William Jewell on Saturday afternoon.
SEATTLE U
Seattle University men's tennis (0-5) split singles matches with Eastern Washington (2-0) but the doubles point proved to be the difference maker as the Eagles earned a 4-3 win.
UT RIO GRANDE VALLEY
The Vaqueros opened their season at home with a 6-1 victory over UMBC and then lost 1-6 to No. 61 Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on the road. The win was the first victory for head coach Brett Bernstein as the head coach of the Vaqueros. The Vaqueros hit the road this weekend to face Concordia on Friday and No. 46 SMU on Sunday.
WAC CHAMPIONSHIP
The 2015 WAC Tennis Championship travels to Brownsville, Texas from April 29th to May 1st. This year's championships will be hosted by Texas Rio Grand Valley. The New Mexico State men will look to repeat a WAC title. The Grand Canyon women won the regular season while New Mexico State won the tournament last season.
