DENVER - Grand Canyon's Iryna Glavnyk and Menna Elmidany have been named Western Athletic Conference Swimmer and Diver of the week, respectively, for Dec. 28-Jan 3.
Glavnyk, a junior from Kiev, Ukraine (All-Republic Higher Specialized School in Physical Education) competed against No. 39 Boise State and No. 42 San Diego State as well as UNLV and UC San Diego where she placed second in the 100 and 200 backstroke events and 7th in the 200 IM.
Elmidany, a freshman from Alexandria, Egypt (Nermian Ismail Preparatory School) placed 2nd on the 1M with a score of 252.40 and 5th on the 3M with a score of 244.55. Both of Elmidany's scores were team records.
Other swimmer nominees: CSU Bakersfield's Michaela Paige continued a strong winter with three individual wins over CSU Bakersfield's two duals this week while finishing in the top three in all five events. The Lompoc, Calif. native's time of 2:05.58 in the 200 fly against Fresno State was good enough for a three-second victory and ranked her 11th in the WAC so far this season. Paige earned a double against the Bulldogs with a win in the 500 free (5:08.31) and also took a victory against San José State in the 100 fly (58.67) on Thursday. The senior helped the Roadrunners' 400 free relay team to a first-place finish against SJSU and second against Fresno State with the lower time coming against the Bulldogs (3:34.21).
