GRAND CANYON'S GLAZE NAMED WAC PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Grand Canyon senior forward Grandy Glaze has been named Western Athletic Conference Men's Basketball Player of the Week for the week of Dec. 28-Jan. 3. This is his second WAC Player of the Week honor of the season.
The Toronto, Ontario, native averaged 18.5 points on 68 percent shooting and 7.5 rebounds in leading the Antelopes to a pair of victories to extend their win streak to six games. In a road win at SIUE last Monday, Glaze finished with 17 points, including a career-best 7-of-8 free throws, to go along with seven rebounds. He followed it up with 20 points on 10-of-13 shooting and eight rebounds in a win over Bethune-Cookman on Sunday. It was the seventh time he has shot 75 percent or better in a game this season. Glaze now leads the WAC in field goal percentage this season at 63.5 percent.
Other nominees included: Aly Ahmed of CSU Bakersfield averaged 16.3 points, 5.7 rebounds, 2.3 assists, 1.6 blocks and 1.0 steals as the Roadrunners went 2-1 on the week ... Missouri-Kansas City's Dashawn King averaged 13.5 points, 3.0 steals, 2.0 assists and 1.5 rebounds over two games last week ... Pascal Siakam of NM State averaged 22.5 points, 10.0 rebounds, 5.0 assists, 2.0 blocks and 1.0 steals as the Aggies went 1-1 on the week ... Seattle U's Manroop Clair averaged 14.0 points, 1.5 rebounds and 1.0 steals as the Redhawks went 1-1 on the week ... Dakota Slaughter of UT Rio Grande Valley averaged 16.0 points, 4.5 rebounds and 2.0 assists over two games last week ... Utah Valley's Marcel Davis averaged 14.5 points, 7.5 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 1.5 steals as the Wolverines went 1-1 on the week.
WAC STAT LEADERS
CSU Bakersfield leads the WAC in scoring defense (65.2), blocks (5.33), assists (15.80), turnover margin (1.93), assist-turnover ratio (1.22) and offensive rebounds (13.20). NM State is tops in field goal percentage defense (40.1), rebounding (41.7), rebounding defense (30.5), rebounding margin (11.1) and defensive rebounds (29.13), while Grand Canyon leads the league in scoring (78.7), scoring margin (10.1) and field goal percentage (47.6). Chicago State is tops in steals (8.38) and three-pointers per game (8.0), Utah Valley leads the WAC in free throw percentage (70.5) and three-point field goal percentage defense (30.7), and Seattle U is tops in three-point field goal percentage (38.2).
Individually, NM State's Pascal Siakam leads the WAC in scoring (23.6), rebounding (11.7), blocked shots (1.93), defensive rebounds (7.73) and minutes per game (35.27). Grand Canyon's DeWayne Russell leads the WAC in assists (5.73) and steals (1.93), while teammate Joshua Braun is tops in free throw percentage (87.2) and three-point field goal percentage (47.8) and teammate Grandy Glaze leads the WAC in field goal percentage (63.5). Seattle U's Manroop Clair leads the WAC in three-pointers per game (3.08), while CSU Bakersfield's Brent Wrapp and Kevin Mays are tops in assist-turnover ratio (2.73) and offensive rebounds (4.07).
GRAND CANYON RANKED NO. 16 IN MID-MAJOR TOP 25
In the Jan. 4 CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Top 25, Grand Canyon is ranked No. 16. The Antelopes currently have the best RPI of all WAC teams at 125 and posted a 13-2 non-conference record, including a 9-1 mark at home.
NM STATE'S SIAKAM CLIMBING PROGRAM BLOCKS CHART
NM State sophomore Pascal Siakam has 90 career blocks in his 49 career games, ranking ninth on the program career list. He needs just two blocks to tie for eighth with Sam Lacey (1967-70). Siakam also has 790 career points and 437 career rebounds.
GRAND CANYON POSTS SECOND SIX-GAME WIN STREAK OF SEASON
After picking up wins over SIUE and Bethune-Cookman last week, Grand Canyon has now won six in a row. It is the Lopes' second six-game winning streak of the season after starting the season 6-0.
CSUB EARNS 10 NON-CONFERENCE WINS FOR FIRST TIME IN DIVISION I HISTORY
When it defeated UC Riverside on Jan. 2, CSU Bakersfield picked up its 10th non-conference win of the season for the first time in program Division I history, doing so the quickest since the 1997-98 season. It marks the fifth-straight season that Rod Barnes has led the ‘Runners to at least 10 victories, something that hadn't been done prior in the program's Division I history.
UTRGV'S HINES, KIMASA MOVING UP CAREER BLOCKED SHOTS CHART
UT Rio Grande Valley student-athletes Shaquille Hines and Dan Kimasa are two of the best blocking threats in program history. Hines, a senior, ranks fifth all-time in career blocks (63), while the sophomore Kimasa is seventh (57).
