OREM, Utah - An exciting first half saw the fourth-seed UNLV Rebels avenge an earlier season loss to the fifth-seed UTRGV Vaqueros with a 3-2 win in the 2016 WAC Men's Soccer Tournament on Thursday evening at Clyde Field in Orem, Utah.
The first half was an explosion of goals as the two teams saw five scores between them. UNLV's Timo Mehlich used a long ball from 25 yards out to open up the scoring in the 14th minute but it didn't take UTRGV long to respond as Damian Roszczky evened it up in the 17th minute. The Vaqueros took the lead less than two minutes later as Isidro Martinez fired the ball into the left corner for the 2-1 advantage.
UNLV evened it up again in the 38th minute as Danny Musovski fed in a ball to Oscar Velazquez, who scored his fourth goal of the year. The Rebels took the lead just over a minute later as a shot by Mehlich was headed into their own net by a UTRGV defender for the own goal and the 3-2 UNLV halftime lead.
The Rebels survive to play tournament host and top-seed Utah Valley on Friday night, beginning at 6 p.m. on Clyde Field.
