Highlights

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -
No. 4 Utah Valley defeated No. 5 NM State, 2-0, in the first match of the 2016 WAC Women's Soccer Tournament on Thursday, advancing to the semifinals. The Wolverines will face No. 1 seed Seattle U at 4 p.m. CT on Friday.

Junior Libby Weaver opened the scoring for UVU in the 12th minute, smashing home a shot from the middle of the box. Taylor Kirk picked up the assist after her shot attempt was blocked.

UVU extended it lead in the 59th minute when Sheridan Fox found a bouncing ball just outside the 18-yard box and hammered a half-volley that nestled into the top corner at the far post.

The Wolverines controlled much of the match, outshooting the Aggies 21-6, including a 10-0 advantage in shots on goal. Despite the lack of shots on target, the Aggies were able to muster a number of chances that just missed, including an effort off the crossbar late in the second half and a breakaway chance that ended up with a yellow card caution on UVU's keeper Brooklyn Nielsen.

The second match of the tournament will take place later tonight at No. 3 UMKC faces No. 6 UTRGV. Watch that, and all matches of the tournament, on the WAC Digital Network tonight at 7 p.m. CT on the WAC Digital Network.
