GRAND CANYON'S GLAZE NAMED WAC PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Grand Canyon senior forward Grandy Glaze has been named Western Athletic Conference Men's Basketball Player of the Week for the week of Feb. 8-14. This is his third WAC Player of the Week honor of the season.
The Toronto, Ontario, native averaged 20.5 points on 63 percent shooting, 12.5 rebounds and 2.0 steals per game as the Lopes went 2-0 on the week. Glaze opened the week with 25 points on 10-of-15 shooting to go along with a career-high 15 rebounds and two steals in a non-conference win over Benedictine. In a road win at Seattle U on Saturday, he posted his third straight double-double and his 10th of the season with 16 points and a game-high 10 rebounds to go with two steals and one assist. The WAC leader in field goal percentage (61.5), Glaze has shot 50 percent or better from the field in 18 of 25 games this season and eight of 10 WAC games.
Other nominees included: CSU Bakersfield's Kevin Mays finished with 17 points on 75 percent shooting to go with six rebounds in a win over Utah Valley ... Trayvon Palmer of Chicago State tallied 13 points, three steals, two rebounds, two assists and a block in a loss to NM State ... Missouri-Kansas City's Dashawn King finished with 17 points, five rebounds, two assists and a steal in a win over UT Rio Grande Valley ... Pascal Siakam of NM State averaged 16.0 points, 7.0 rebounds and 3.5 blocks in a pair of victories ... Seattle U's Manroop Clair tallied a game-high 20 points on 67 percent shooting in a loss to Grand Canyon ... Dan Kimasa of UT Rio Grande Valley finished with 17 points and six rebounds in a loss at UMKC ... Utah Valley's Jaden Jackson scored a game-high 20 points on 64 percent shooting in a loss at CSUB.
WAC STAT LEADERS
NM State leads the WAC in field goal percentage (48.0), field goal percentage defense (39.4), rebounding (41.6), rebounding defense (30.5), rebounding margin (11.1) and defensive rebounds (29.27), while CSU Bakersfield is tops in scoring defense (64.4), blocks (5.24), assists (16.04), turnover margin (2.04) and assist-turnover ratio (1.27). Grand Canyon leads the WAC in scoring (77.8), scoring margin (9.3) and three-point field goal percentage (37.5), while Utah Valley is tops in free throw percentage (73.3), three-point field goal percentage defense (32.2) and three-pointers per game (8.24). Chicago State leads the WAC in steals (8.11) and offensive rebounds (13.07).
Individually, NM State's Pascal Siakam leads the WAC in scoring (21.7), rebounding (11.7), blocked shots (2.27), offensive rebounds (4.04), defensive rebounds (7.62) and minutes per game (34.5). Grand Canyon's Grandy Glaze is tops in field goal percentage (61.5), while teammate DeWayne Russell leads the WAC in assists (5.35) and Joshua Braun is tops in free throw percentage (86.3) and three-point field goal percentage (43.5). CSU Bakersfield's Dedrick Basile, Damiyne Durham and Brent Wrapp are tops in steals (1.88), three-pointers per game (2.79) and assist-turnover ratio (2.71), respectively.
In WAC games only, NM State leads the WAC in field goal percentage (49.3), rebounding (41.3), rebounding defense (31.1), rebounding margin (10.2), blocks (6.09), assists (16.9) and defensive rebounds (29.0), while CSUB is tops in scoring defense (63.3), scoring margin (12.1), field goal percentage defense (38.9) and three-point field goal percentage defense (30.5). Utah Valley leads the WAC in scoring (79.1), free throw percentage (76.86), three-point field goal percentage (38.1) and three-pointers per game (9.4), while Chicago State is tops in steals (7.8) and turnover margin (2.9). Grand Canyon leads the league in assist-turnover ratio (1.35) and Missouri-Kansas City is tops in offensive rebounds (12.6).
Individually in WAC games, Siakam leads the WAC in scoring (20.2), rebounding (12.2), offensive rebounds (4.5) and defensive rebounds (7.7), and is tied with CSUB's Justin Hollins for the lead in blocks (2.8). NM State's Johnathon Wilkins leads the league in field goal percentage (65.3), while teammate Ian Baker is tops in free throw percentage (91.7). Utah Valley's Marcel Davis is tops in assists (5.7), while Basile is tops in steals (2.2), and UMKC's LaVell Boyd leads the league in three-point field goal percentage (42.9) and three-pointers per game (2.70). Russell is tops in assist-turnover ratio (3.54), while UT Rio Grande Valley's Antonio Green leads the WAC in minutes per game (36.2).
NM STATE'S SIAKAM SCORES 1,000TH CAREER POINT
With his final shot at Chicago State on Feb. 13, NM State sophomore Pascal Siakam recorded his 1,000th career point. He became the first sophomore in NM State history to reach 1,000 points, was the seventh Aggie to reach the mark in his first two seasons and became the 33rd member of the NM State 1,000-Point Club.
CSU BAKERSFIELD'S AHMED JOINS 1,000-POINT CLUB
At the 18:06 mark in the second half against Utah Valley on Feb. 13, CSU Bakersfield senior Aly Ahmed scored his 1,000th career point, becoming just the 12th Roadrunner ever to score 1,000 points and just the sixth player ever to score 1,000 points and grab 500 rebounds.
GCU'S BRAUN NAMED ACADEMIC ALL-DISTRICT
Grand Canyon redshirt sophomore Joshua Braun was named first team Academic All-District 8 and advances to the national ballot for Academic All-America® consideration. That team will be announced on March 3. Braun is majoring in business management and currently carries a 3.83 grade-point average. He was named Academic All-WAC last year. On the court, he is one of two players in the WAC named to the mid-season watch list for the Lou Henson Award, given annually to the top Division I Mid-Major player.
NM STATE'S MENZIES EIGHTH ON WAC WINS CHART
NM State head coach Marvin Menzies is eighth on the all-time WAC victories chart with 99 wins. He needs two more wins to tie Ned Wulk of Arizona State (1962-78) in seventh place with 101. Menzies is also third in WAC winning percentage (72.8) and tied for eighth with Gary Colson of New Mexico and Fresno State (1980-94) in overall wins at 193.
GRAND CANYON TIED FOR MOST WINS ON THE NATION
With a pair of wins last week, Grand Canyon improved to 22-4 on the season, tied for the most wins in NCAA Division I play. The Lopes were the third team to reach 22 wins. It is also the best start through 26 games since the team transitioned to Division I.
NM STATE BOASTS 33-GAME WAC HOME WINNING STREAK
NM State is currently riding a 33-game WAC home winning streak, the second-longest in the country behind the 36 straight Southland wins by Stephen F. Austin. The Aggies' last WAC home loss was a 68-60 loss to Nevada on Jan. 26, 2012. NM State is 5-0 at the Pan American Center in WAC play this season, went 7-0 in 2014-15, 8-0 in 2013-14, 9-0 in 2012-13 and 4-0 to close out the 2011-12 season.
CSU BAKERSFIELD DEFENSE DOMINATES
CSU Bakersfield, which leads the WAC in scoring defense, has held its opponent to 30 or less points in the first half 17 times this season. The ‘Runners have held their opponent to 50 points or less four times this season and 60 points or less eight times.
