DENVER - Seattle U's Michael Schoettler and NM State's Ashvarya Shrivastav have been named Western Athletic Conference Tennis Players of the Week, respectively, for Feb. 8-14.
Schoettler, a freshman from Tacoma, Wash. (A Beka Homeschool) was one of two Redhawks to win both singles and both doubles matches this weekend as Seattle U picked up their first spring win vs. George Fox. He was also one of two from SU to earn a singles point vs. Portland State, winning a closely contested three-set match.
Shrivastav, a senior from Pune, India (Institute of Open Schooling) completed the sweep against Pima CC when she defeated Kelsey Brown, who is ranked No. 19 in the junior college rankings according to the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, 6-1, 6-1. Against No. 58 Arizona, Shrivastav managed to get three games in each set in her loss to Lauren Marker, who is ranked No. 39 in singles play heading into this weekend.
Other men's nominees: Missouri-Kansas City's Amaury Navette went 1-1 in singles and 1-1 in doubles action in a pair of road duals this weekend in Texas... He teamed with Vinh Pham on Friday to pick up a doubles win and secure the doubles point against ACU, before taking a straight set singles win on Saturday against UT Arlington at the No. 5 position.
