WAC PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
Seattle U's Michael Schoettler and NM State's Ashvarya Shrivastav have been named Western Athletic Conference Tennis Players of the Week, respectively, for Feb. 8-14.
Schoettler, a freshman from Tacoma, Wash. (A Beka Homeschool) was one of two Redhawks to win both singles and both doubles matches this weekend as Seattle U picked up their first spring win vs. George Fox. He was also one of two from SU to earn a singles point vs. Portland State, winning a closely contested three-set match.
Shrivastav, a senior from Pune, India (Institute of Open Schooling) completed the sweep against Pima CC when she defeated Kelsey Brown, who is ranked No. 19 in the junior college rankings according to the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, 6-1, 6-1. Against No. 58 Arizona, Shrivastav managed to get three games in each set in her loss to Lauren Marker, who is ranked No. 39 in singles play heading into this weekend.
CHICAGO STATE
The Chicago State men's tennis team captured its first dual-match victory of the 2016 season here Friday evening after defeating Cardinal Stritch by a score of 6-1 at the H-F Racquet and Fitness Club. The win snapped a seven-match losing streak for the Cougars, who moved their record to 1-7 on the year. Chicago State women's tennis continued its season-opening, seven-match homestand today at the H-F Racquet and Fitness Club with a close battle against visiting Cardinal Stritch, but the Wolves claimed a 4-3 victory.
GRAND CANYON
The Grand Canyon men's tennis team started its three match homestand with a matchup against UC Santa Barbara. The Lopes were able to come away with two victories in singles but GCU fell to the Gauchos 5-2. GCU is now 4-4 this season. The Grand Canyon women's tennis team started its two match road trip this weekend starting in Idaho with a matchup against Idaho State. The Lopes dropped a nail biter to the Bengals with a 4-3 loss. GCU is now 3-4 this season. The team concluded its two-match road trip with a matchup against Utah State. Tatum Prudhomme and Lana Macukat capped off a perfect weekend in singles play but the Lopes fell to Utah State 5-2.
MISSOURI-KANSAS CITY
The UMKC men's tennis squad jumped out of the gates with victories in all three of the doubles matches, but Abilene Christian overcame some tight singles matches to take a 6-1 victory on Friday. The squad played another tight contest on the road Saturday, but UT-Arlington came out on top, winning four tiebreakers for sets in a 5-2 decision. The UMKC women's tennis team fell by 4-0 scores to both Iowa and Illinois State on Saturday in Iowa City, both teams that entered the weekend undefeated.
NM STATE
The New Mexico State men's tennis team dropped its weekend opener to Nebraska, 6-1, on Saturday at the Genesis Health Club. The team was outmatched by No. 67 Wichita State on Sunday at the Genesis Health Club, falling to the Shockers 7-0. The Aggies (1-6) dropped the top two spots in singles play against Wichita State's top two players - both of whom were ranked No. 95 and No. 121 respectively. The Aggies now return home and hope to regroup before they host their home-opener against Western New Mexico at 11 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 19, at the NMSU Tennis Center. The NM State women's tennis team shined in the Arizona sun Friday afternoon as the Aggies swept Pima Community College 7-0 at the LaNelle Robson Tennis Center. New Mexico State dominated the Aztecs in doubles play, giving up just two games combined as the Aggies made quick work of Pima CC. The team then had its two-match winning-streak snapped on Saturday at the hands of No. 58 Arizona, 7-0, at the LaNelle Robson Tennis Center
SEATTLE U
Seattle University men's tennis (0-9) won the doubles point and would take the final two matches to three sets, but Portland State (5-1) ultimately earned the 4-3 victory. They won the doubles point and would go on to win five of six singles in a 6-1 victory vs. George Fox (1-2), their first spring win of 2016. Seattle University women's tennis (5-7) continued their fight to the end after Gonzaga (5-1) had already clinched the match, but ultimately fell, 5-2, to the Bulldogs.
WAC CHAMPIONSHIP
The 2015 WAC Tennis Championship travels to Brownsville, Texas from April 29th to May 1st. This year's championships will be hosted by Texas Rio Grand Valley. The New Mexico State men will look to repeat a WAC title. The Grand Canyon women won the regular season while New Mexico State won the tournament last season.
