WAC PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
UT Rio Grande Valley's Yehonatan Kaufman and Missouri-Kansas City's Allie Schulte have been named Western Athletic Conference Tennis Players of the Week, respectively, for Jan. 25-31.
Kaufman, a freshman from Ramat HaSharon, Israel went 2-0 in singles on the weekend to improve to a team-leading 3-1 on the season. Kaufman didn't drop a game against Concordia's Micah Austin after picking up the 6-0, 6-0 win on court five. He followed that with a 6-3, 7-5 win over No. 49 SMU's Charles Nettlefold on court four as Kaufman recorded the lone point for the Vaqueros against the Mustangs. Kaufman went 1-1 in doubles with partner Elliot Johnstone. They defeated Concordia's duo of Austin and Iousa Malaki 6-2 on court two. It was Kaufman's second win in doubles this season and first with Johnstone.
Schulte, a sophomore from Wichita, Kan. (Kapaun Mount Carmel HS) took a straight set win over Lucy Givens of Missouri on Saturday in a road game, garnering the first match point won for the Roos against Mizzou since 1997. She was also leading 5-3 in No. 3 doubles, but MU clinched the other two before it could finish.
Other women's nominees: UT Rio Grande Valley's Dominique Esparza improved to 2-3 in singles after defeating Texas A&M-Kingsville's Marija Dimitrovska 6-2, 6-2 on court two as she helped the Vaqueros to a 6-1 victory over the Javelinas. Esparza and partner Reegan Greenwood recorded their first doubles victory of the season after beating Dimitrovska and Mariaxi Herrera 6-1 on court one.
CHICAGO STATE
The Chicago State women's tennis team (0-3) continued its seven-match homestand this past weekend with a pair of 6-1 defeats to Oakland and Southeast Missouri State at the H-F Racquet and Fitness Club in Homewood, Ill. The Cougars return to the H-F Racquet and Fitness Club this Saturday, Feb. 6 against SIU Edwardsville beginning at 2 p.m.
GRAND CANYON
Make it three wins in-a-row for the Grand Canyon men's tennis team as they begin its two-match weekend in Pocatello, Idaho with a win against Idaho State. The Lopes won eight of the nine matches played against the Bengals to improve to 3-1 this season. The team wrapped up its two match weekend in Logan, Utah with a matchup against Utah State. GCU saw its three-match winning streak snapped as they fell to the Aggies 7-0. GCU is now 3-2 this season.
MISSOURI-KANSAS CITY
UMKC women's tennis dropped a 6-1 contest at Missouri on Saturday, it was the first point the Roos have scored against the Tigers since 1997. The Tigers (4-0) took the doubles point, winning the matches at both No. 1 and No. 2, while the Roos (2-1) were in the lead at the No. 3 position. In singles play, the Roos picked up their lone win at the No. 6 position from sophomore Allie Schulte, who tallied a straight set 6-0, 6-0 victory. The Roos were competitive at the No. 2 and No. 5 positions, but Mizzou prevailed in straight sets none the less.
NM STATE
The NM State men's tennis team dropped its dual season opener on the road to No. 69 Arizona Friday afternoon at the LaNelle Robson Tennis Center, 7-0. The team saw its first win slip away after going up 3-0, and fell to Gonzaga, 4-3, Saturday afternoon at the LaNelle Robson Tennis Center on the campus of the University of Arizona. The New Mexico State women's tennis team had a hard-fought battle against UNLV Friday at the Fertitta Tennis Complex, but dropped its dual opener 7-0. A key point in doubles play could've swung things the other way in NM State's 5-2 loss to Pacific on Saturday at the Fertitta Tennis Complex on the campus of UNLV. The team turned things around on Sunday at the Fertitta Tennis Complex, defeating Weber State 5-2 for its first win of the dual season.
SEATTLE U
Seattle University men's tennis (0-6) dropped the doubles point to Portland State (2-1) and, despite being able to recover by winning two singles matches, eventually dropped the match, 5-2. The Redhawks return to the Rose City on Friday, Feb. 5 before hosting their first home match of 2016 vs. Idaho on Sunday, Feb. 7 at Sand Point Tennis Center. The match vs. the Vandals starts a three-match homestand for Seattle U, who will also host Portland State (Feb. 12) and George Fox (Feb. 13) before hitting the road again.
UT RIO GRANDE VALLEY
The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros men's tennis team did not lose a set as they swept the Concordia University Tornados 7-0 at the River Place Country Club on Friday. Freshman Yehonatan Kaufman recorded a singles victory as the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros men's tennis team fell 1-6 against the No. 49 Southern Methodist University Mustangs on Sunday at the SMU Tennis Center. The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros women's tennis team remained perfect at home after defeating the Texas A&M-Kingsville Javelinas 6-1 on Sunday at the Orville Cox Tennis Center. The Vaqueros will be back in action when they host the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders at the Orville Cox Tennis Center on February 26 at 12 p.m.
WAC CHAMPIONSHIP
The 2015 WAC Tennis Championship travels to Brownsville, Texas from April 29th to May 1st. This year's championships will be hosted by Texas Rio Grand Valley. The New Mexico State men will look to repeat a WAC title. The Grand Canyon women won the regular season while New Mexico State won the tournament last season.
