DENVER - Grand Canyon's Iryna Glavnyk and Northern Arizona's Chelsea Jackson have been named Western Athletic Conference Swimmer and Diver of the week, respectively, for Feb. 1-7.
Glavnyk, a junior from Kiev, Ukraine (All-Republic Higher Specialized School in Physical Education) won 4 events, 3 individual (100 Back, 200 Back, and 200 IM) and 1 relay (200 Medley Relay) against the University of Idaho. Her individual event times were the top three ranked women's swims in the WAC this week.
Jackson, a senior from Flagstaff, Ariz. (Northland Prep) broke her own Wall Aquatic Center pool record on 1-meter, winning the event versus Idaho last Saturday with a lifetime-best score of 316.50. The local native of Flagstaff helped close her hometown pool - hosting its final meet ever before the team moves into their new facility - with a pair of victories including the 3-meter event, which she won with a score of 308.33. It marked the second consecutive meet that Jackson won both springboard diving events.
Other swimmer nominees: Northern Arizona's Alina Staffeldt posted a tremendous day in the butterfly events against Idaho last Saturday, winning both the 100m and 200m races in convincing fashion. Staffeldt opened her day by besting Idaho's Emily Kliewer by nearly two seconds with a winning time of 1:03.50 in the 100m fly and then led a one-two-three NAU sweep of the 200m fly with a time of 2:21.02. Staffeldt's pair of wins capped a 6-for-6 stretch in the butterfly events during the final three meets of the regular season leading up to the WAC Championships. Northern Colorado's Carleigh Barrett earned two first place finishes in individual races, along with a second place finish to add 22 team points to the Bears' overall today in the meet. Also had the fastest split in the 200 free relay to help her team to a 2nd place finish (UNC also earned first in the event) for another 4 team points.
Other diver nominees: Northern Colorado's Savanna Meadows picked up a 3rd and 2nd place finish for the Bears at their meet against Colorado State on Wednesday. Meadows also earned a season best on platform on Friday at the Air Force Invite for a fifth place overall finish in the event out of 41 competitors. In the 1 meter, she picked up a 5th place finish in prelims to earn a spot in the finals, where she landed 7th overall out of 49 divers. On Saturday, Meadows broke a school and personal record on the 3 meter with her prelims dive (3rd overall) earning another shot at the finals, where she landed another 7th place finish out of 49 divers.
