DENVER - NM State's Kenneth Fadke II and UT Rio Grande Valley's Emma Mesta have been named Western Athletic Conference Men's and Women's Golfers of the Week, respectively, for Feb. 24 through March 1.
Fadke, a senior from Hobbs, N.M. (Hobbs HS), put together three rounds at or under par at the National Invitational Tournament in Tucson, Ariz. After posting identical 2-under 70s during the first two rounds, he wrapped up the tournament with an even par 70 on Tuesday as the Aggies finished 10th with a 7-over 871. Individually, he tied for 10th for his best finish of the season.
Mesta, a freshman from Torreon, Mexico (Gary Gilchrist Golf Academy), recorded the first collegiate victory of her young career after winning the GCU Invitational with an 8-over 221. After opening the tournament with a first-round 78, she shot an even-par 71 on the second day and a one-over 72 to win the tournament by four strokes.
Other men's nominees: UT Rio Grande Valley's Andres Gonzalez led the Vaqueros with an 8-over 323 at the Colin Montgomerie HBU Invitational.
Other women's nominees: Missouri-Kansas City's Cynthia Diaz put together the third-best tournament in UMKC history, shooting a 4-over 220 to tie for 4th at the Rio Verde Collegiate Invitational … NM State's Camille Orito shot a 1-under 71 to finish 11-over and tie for 21st at the Bruin Wave Invitational.
