DENVER - UT Rio Grande Valley's Yariel Matute and Javier Carretero have been named Western Athletic Conference Track and Field Athletes of the week, respectively, for March 7-13.
Matute, a freshman from Mission, Texas (Juarez Lincoln High School) posted a sixth place finish in the 100-meter dash after crossing the finish line with a time of 10.97 seconds. He then posted a second place finish in the 200-meter dash after finishing with a time of 21.68 seconds.
Carretero, a senior from Montijo, Badajoz, Spain (Club Atletismo Montijo) won the men's hammer throw at the Islander Open with a throw of 55.69 meters. Carretero was the only thrower to surpass 51 meters with the second place finisher hitting a 50.94 meters.
Other field nominees: CSU Bakersfield's Joselito Flores tied his high jump PR with a jump of 6-8 at the Bakersfield College Relays.
