WAC TRACK & FIELD ATHLETES OF THE WEEK ANNOUNCED
MEN
UT Rio Grande Valley's Yariel Matute and Javier Carretero have been named Western Athletic Conference Track and Field Athletes of the week, respectively, for March 7-13.
Matute, a freshman from Mission, Texas (Juarez Lincoln High School) posted a sixth place finish in the 100-meter dash after crossing the finish line with a time of 10.97 seconds. He then posted a second place finish in the 200-meter dash after finishing with a time of 21.68 seconds.
Carretero, a senior from Montijo, Badajoz, Spain (Club Atletismo Montijo) won the men's hammer throw at the Islander Open with a throw of 55.69 meters. Carretero was the only thrower to surpass 51 meters with the second place finisher hitting a 50.94 meters.
Other field nominees: CSU Bakersfield's Joselito Flores tied his high jump PR with a jump of 6-8 at the Bakersfield College Relays.
WOMEN
UT Rio Grande Valley's Megan Shaw has been named Western Athletic Conference Field Athlete of the Week, respectively, for March 7-13.
Shaw, a senior from Refugio, Texas (Refugio High School) went on to win the shot put and discus at the Islander Open last weekend. Shaw hit a mark of 14.17 meters in the shot put and was the only thrower to surpass the 14-meter mark. She then went on to win the discus throw with a throw of 43.18 meters and was the only thrower to surpass the 42-meter mark
THIS WEEK IN THE WAC
Only two teams in the conference competed this weekend. CSU Bakersfield hosted the Bakersfield College Relays and UT Rio Grande Valley traveled to the Islander Open.
CSU BAKERSFIELD
Five Roadrunners earned victories in their events for the CSU Bakersfield track and field team on Saturday at the BC Relays. Leading the way were sophomore Joselito Flores, junior Alisha Byrd, and sophomore Angel Valdez.
UT RIO GRANDE VALLEY
The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros men's and women's track and field teams combined to win five events at the Islander Open on Saturday at the Dugan Family Track & Field Stadium. Senior Javier Carretero won the men's hammer throw with a throw of 55.69 meters while Cristina Santiago Bravo won the women's hammer throw with a throw of 51.37 meters. Junior Alyssa Canul finished in second place in the women's hammer throw after hitting a mark of 47.91 meters and sophomores Samantha Sepulveda and Ashley Pierce finished in fifth and sixth respectively.
WAC CHAMPIONSHIPS
The 2016 WAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships are hosted by Missouri-Kansas City and held in Kansas City, Mo. from May 11-14. Last year, the Utah Valley won and the Missouri-Kansas City women took home the championship.
NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS
The 2016 Outdoor Track and Field National Championships will take place in Eugene, Ore. from June 8-11.
