DENVER - Utah Valley's Greyson Bogden and UT Rio Grande Valley's Johnny Gonzalez have been named Western Athletic Conference Hitter and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, for March 14 - March 20.
Bogden, a senior shortstop from Bluffdale, Utah (Riverton HS), led UVU to a big series win over Minnesota, hitting .615 with a .642 on-base percentage and a .923 slugging percentage. He went 8-for-13 over the three-game set, recording multi-hit games in all three contests. His best game came on Saturday, going 3-for-3 with a school-record tying three doubles in a 3-2 win.
Gonzalez, a sophomore right-hander from Corpus Christi, Texas (Moody HS), tie his career high with eight strikeouts over six scoreless innings to earn the win against Jackson State on Saturday. Throwing 52 of 78 pitches for strikes, it was his second-straight outing of six shutout innings without a walk. He is also riding a 14.2 inning scoreless streak and a 12.1 inning walkless streak.
Other Hitter of the Week nominees: CSU Bakersfield shortstop Mahlik Jones hit .438 in a four-game series against Oklahoma, also making an appearance on the mound on Saturday … Northern Colorado infielder Jake Ek hit .500 in a pair of games at Colorado Mesa … Sacramento State outfielder Andrew McWilliam drove in two of three runs in Sunday's win over Cal Poly … Seattle U infielder Sheldon Stober led the Redhawks offensively, hitting .350 with two doubles and a home run … UT Rio Grande Valley catcher Jose Garcia hit .438 as the Vaqueros went 2-2 on the week.
Other Pitcher of the Week nominees: NM State's Kyle Bradish struck out eight over seven innings to earn the win at UC Riverside … Sacramento State's Max Karnos allowed one run on just three hits to earn the win on Sunday against Cal Poly … Seattle U's Nick Meservey pitched 7.1 scoreless innings on Monday against Minnesota and returned on Sunday to throw 4.2 two-run innings at UC Irvine … Utah Valley's Danny Beddes nearly earned the complete-game win, going 8.2 innings in Saturday's win over Minnesota.
