DENVER - UT Rio Grande Valley's Andres Hernandez and Chicago State's Monica Pulgar have been named Western Athletic Conference Tennis Players of the Week, respectively, for Feb. 20- March 6.
Hernandez, a freshman from Monterrey, Mexico (Laurel Springs High School) recorded his first singles victory in his first singles match of the season as he defeated UTSA's Ricardo Gonzalez 7-6, 4-6, 6-2. His victory at the No. 6 spot helped the Vaqueros clinch their match against UTSA in the H-E-B Tournament of Champions in Corpus Christi.
Pulgar, a freshman from Madrid, Spain (San Jose de Cluny High School) went 4-0 in singles and doubles against two Division 1 Horizon League teams. She teamed with Marnie Perez-Ochoa in doubles to defeat Green Bay's Maria Neff and Stephanie Londre 6-0. Pulgar faced Neff in Singles with a convincing 6-1, 6-1 victory which helped the Women defeat Green Bay 4-3. Pulgar and Perez Ochoa teamed again to defeat Milwaukee's Dana Shannon and Masha Lobanova 6-3. Pulgar then faced Shannon in Singles and won a very tight contest 7-6(1), 7-6(4).
Other women's nominees: NM State's Ashvarya Shrivastav fought tooth-and-nail on Saturday to down UTEP's Lois Wagenvoort 7-6, 7-6 (11-9). Seattle U's Michelle Lui was the only Redhawk to not allow her singles opponent a point, blanking George Fox's Sarah Tuemmler, 6-0, 6-0.
