DENVER - Missouri-Kansas City's Mike Psarros and Seattle U's Kelli Woodman have been named Western Athletic Conference Tennis Players of the Week, respectively, for April 11-17.
Psarros, a junior from Athens, Greece went undefeated on the week against Saint Louis and Illinois State. He has won five straight doubles matches at No. 1 and has 12 wins from the No. 4 position, which is the most in school history at that spot. Psarros set the school record with partner Airam Castellano for most doubles wins in a season at 22 and extended the record for most doubles wins from the No. 1 spot. The juniors 20 singles wins this season are the third most in UMKC history trailing on Castellano and Amaury Navette from this season. He also set the UMKC record with his 49th career doubles victory.
Woodman, a junior from Denver, Colo. (Cherry Creek HS) won her fifth straight singles match, the Redhawks' longest active streak. In doubles, she and partner Michelle Lui bumped their win streak up to a team-leading four straight matches.
Other men's nominees: Grand Canyon's Mitch Maroscher helped solidify GCU's first win over in-state rival Northern Arizona since being a member of Division 1. The junior picked up his eighth win in doubles and is now 9-10 in singles.
Other women's nominees: UT Rio Grande Valley's Doris Aleksovska went 1-1 in singles and 1-1 in doubles over the weekend. She defeated Texas A&M-Corpus Christi's Kerry Galhos 7-6, 0-6, 12-10 to record the Vaqueros lone point against the Islanders. With the win, Aleksovska finished with an 11-6 record. In doubles, Aleksovska teamed with Dominique Ibarra to defeat Texas State's Pippa Carr and Ammaarah Tim 6-0 on court three. It was Aleksovska's ninth doubles win of the season and her fourth with Ibarra.
