BROWNSVILLE, Texas - No. 4 Seattle U beat No. 5 Chicago State in the first match of the WAC Tennis Tournament Friday at the Brownsville Tennis Center. With the win, the Redhawks advance to the semifinals on Saturday, where they will face top-seeded NM State at 9 a.m. CT.
At No. 1 doubles, the Redhawks' Michelle Lui and Kelli Woodman defeated Chicago State's Leshia Gadacz and Lorea Gamboa, 6-0. In No. 3 doubles, Seattle U's Kristen James and Kailyn Skjonsby defeated the Cougars' Hanna Pangestu and Bryttish Burts, 6-1. No. 2 doubles was unfinished.
Seattle U also swept singles. Lui defeated Gadacz at No. 1, winning 6-3, 6-1. Sari Kwee picked up the win over Monica Pulgar at No. 5, 6-4, 6-3. Clinching the match for the Redhawks was Barbara Carey, as she beat Marnie Perez-Ochoa, 7-6, 0-6, 6-2 on court 4.
