LAWRENCE, Kan. - Day two of the four-day 2016 WAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships saw the first team points captured. Utah Valley's Rusty Jones and Seattle U's Mandie Maddux held onto their day-one leads in the decathlon and heptathlon, respectively, to bring home the first gold medals of the meet. Jones won six of ten events over two days to finish atop the platform with 6,578 points. Maddux, following a winning pentathlon performance at the 2016 WAC Indoor Championship, won five of seven events overall to tally 4,859 points for her first place finish.

As the sun set, the first track finals, the 10,000 meters, netted more team points for the day. For the women, Utah Valley sophomore Savannah Berry claimed the top spot in 35:51.46, beating last year's winner, Seattle U senior Elena Smith, for the gold. Utah Valley junior Jason Lynch led the men's race from start to finish, crossing the line in 30:23.60 for his third consecutive WAC title in the event.

Tomorrow's field event finals begin at 11 a.m. (CT) with the women's hammer throw, while the track events start at 3 p.m. with the final of the women's steeplechase.
