Johnson, Carpenter named ABCA/Rawlings All-Region

DENVER - Less than a week after being selected in the 2016 Major League Baseball Draft, a pair of baseball players from the Western Athletic Conference have been named All-Region by the American Baseball Coaches Association and Rawlings.

NM State outfielder Daniel Johnson, a fifth-round pick of the Washington Nationals, was named First Team All-Midwest Region. Recently named NCBWA Player of the Month for May, he finished his junior season with a .382 average in 57 games with 11 doubles, seven triples, 12 home runs, 50 RBIs and 29 stolen bases.

Seattle U third baseman Brock Carpenter, a 20th-round pick of the Los Angeles Dodgers, earned Second Team All-West Region honors after hitting .327 in 205 at-bats with 15 doubles, three triples, seven home runs and 47 RBIs.

ABCA/Rawlings All-Region first-team selections are nominated for ABCA/Rawlings All-America honors. ABCA/Rawlings All-Americans will be announced on Saturday, June 18 and the ABCA/Rawlings Gold Glove Team will be announced on Sunday, June 19.

The ABCA, founded in 1945, is the primary professional organization for baseball coaches at the amateur level. Its over 8,200 members represent all 50 states and 23 countries. Since its initial meeting of 27 college baseball coaches in June 1945, Association membership has broadened to include eight divisions: NCAA Division I, II and III, NAIA, NJCAA, Pacific Association Division, High School and Youth. The 73rd annual ABCA Convention will be held Jan. 5-8, 2017 in Anaheim, California.
