CSU BAKERSFIELD's BARTEE NAMED WAC WOMENâ€S BASKETBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK
CSU Bakersfield's Jazmyne Bartee has been named Western Athletic Conference Women's Basketball Player of the Week for Jan. 16 through Jan. 22.
Bartee, a junior post from Chandler, Ariz. (Chandler HS), was a perfect 10-for-10 from the field in an overtime win at Utah Valley. The transfer from UNLV finished the game with 23 points, adding 13 rebounds and a WAC season-high eight blocks as the ‘Runners outlasted the Wolverines in Orem. She becomes the third CSUB player in the Division I era to finish perfect from the floor and her eight blocks are second most for the ‘Runners in their Division I history.
Other nominees included: Chicago State's Jessica Cerda led the Cougars with 17 points in a loss at home to UT Rio Grande Valley … Grand Canyon's Brie Mobley scored a season-high 28 points in a loss at Seattle U … UMKC's Kristen Moore scored 17 points as the Roos fell to league-leading NM State … NM State's Gia Pack came off the bench to score 14 points and bring down nine rebounds as the Aggies remained undefeated in conference play … Seattle U's Alexis Montgomery scored 25 points and brought down 14 rebounds in an impressive 86-60 win over Grand Canyon … UT Rio Grande Valley's Mary Savoy recorded her fourth double-double of the season with 10 points and 12 rebounds in a win at Chicago State … Utah Valley's Taylor Gordon scored 22 points and brought down 11 rebounds in an overtime loss to CSU Bakersfield.

This week features some long road trips as Chicago State and UMKC head west to take on CSU Bakersfield and Grand Canyon while Seattle U and Utah Valley both head south for games against NM State and UT Rio Grande Valley. Thursday's contest between Seattle U and NM State will be a battle of unbeatens as both the Redhawks and Aggies will look for the early lead atop the standings.
BY THE NUMBERS
NM State leads the conference in scoring offense (70.3), scoring defense (59.4), scoring margin (+10.8), field goal percentage (.423), three-point defense (.270), turnover margin (+4.42) and defensive rebounds (25.4). CSU Bakersfield is the top free throw shooting team (.734) and also leads the WAC in blocked shots (5.3) and three-pointers made (7.4). UT Rio Grande Valley is the leader in field goal defense (.370) and the Vaqueros are also tops in rebounding offense (39.3), steals (10.9) and offensive rebounds (14.2). Grand Canyon is the top three-point shooting squad (.348) and also lead in assists (15.2) and assist/turnover ratio (1.1). UMKC allows the least opponent rebounds (32.0) and also holds the top rebounding margin (+3.6).
Individually, Grand Canyon's Marina Laramie is the WAC's leading scorer at 19.8 ppg and teammate Zelor Massaquoi is the top rebounder at 8.5 rpg. Utah Valley's Sam Lubcke is the top shooter (.594) while NM State's Brooke Salas is the top free throw shooter (.860) and CSU Bakersfield's Erika Williams is the top three-point shooter (.437). UVU's Mariah Seals is tops in assists (4.9) while fellow Wolverine Taylor Gordon is the leader in steals (3.2). GCU's Casey Rarrick is averaging a WAC-high 2.5 three-pointers per game while CSUB's Jazmyne Bartee is the top shot blocker (2.3). GCU's Laura Marcos-Canedo holds a league-best 2.3 assist/turnover ratio.
In WAC-only play, NM State leads the conference in scoring offense (76.6), scoring margin (+17.0), free throw percentage (.805), field goal percentage (.484) and three-point field goal percentage (.385). UT Rio Grande Valley is the top defensive team, allowing just 52.4 ppg in conference play. Individually, UVU's Taylor Gordon is averaging 19.8 ppg in WAC play and UVU's Sam Lubcke and Seattle U's Alexis Montgomery are tied for the lead in rebounding at 10.0 rpg. SU's Wilma Agunugo is shooting a league-best .647 from the field.
SHE GOT GAME
CSU Bakersfield's Jazmyne Bartee became just the third player this season in NCAA Division I to take a minimum of 10 shots and make them all after going 10-for-10 in a win over Utah Valley. Kelsey Lang of Texas was 11-for-11 in a game over New Orleans on Dec. 20 and Ohio State's Tori McCoy was 10-for-10 against Southern on Dec. 7. Her eight blocks against UVU tie her for 9th among individuals this season while CSUB's 13 blocks as a team in the same game is tied for 10th nationally.
RED-HOT REDHAWKS
While it's just two weeks into the season, Seattle U sits at 4-0 in WAC play, already surpassing their conference win total from a year ago. The 2012-13 Redhawks started the season with seven straight wins en route to their first WAC regular season title.
WINNING WAYS
Currently 5-0 in conference play, defending champion NM State is now 31-2 in WAC games dating back to the start of the 2014-15 season. Add in WAC tournament games and the Aggies are 35-2 against WAC schools over the last three seasons.
HOME COURT ADVANTAGE
CSU Bakersfield closed out 2016 with a milestone victory at home, winning the ‘Runners 100th game at the Icardo Center. Seattle U is also hit a milestone on Jan. 7 against CSUB, earning the Redhawks' 300th win at Connolly Complex.
MILLENIUM AGGIE
NM State senior Brianna Freeman scored her 1,000th career point on Jan. 7 against Chicago State. She becomes the second active player in the WAC with 1,000 points as UT Rio Grande Valley senior Shawnte' Goff has 1,687 points in her UTPA/UTRGV career. The WAC's leader in career points in Colorado State's Becky Hammon, who scored 2,740 points in her Ram career.
