DENVER - North Dakota's Steph Frey and Northern Arizona's Tanya Kurach have been named Western Athletic Conference Women's Swimmer and Diver of the Week, respectively, for Jan. 23-29.
Frey, a senior from Bemidji, Minn., won both of the individual events against South Dakota State. She placed first in the 100 breast (1:03.54) and 100 free (51.54). She also swam a leg of the first place 200 medley relay (1:45.67) and the third place 200 free relay (1:40.67).
Kurach, a sophomore from Saint Petersburg, Russia, was the only WAC diver to finish in the top six of all three events at the Air Force Diving Invitational. She finished second of 66 in the 1 meter (288.10) and also finished second in the 3 meter (311.30). Her platform score (207.30) was a season-high and earned her sixth place out of 62 divers.
Other swimmer nominees: New Mexico State's Lauren Wood won the 100 breast (1:06.36) and placed second in the 200 breast (2:22.04) against New Mexico… Grand Canyon's Jovanna Koens placed fourth in the 100 free (50.16) and eighth in the 50 free (23.34) against BYU… Northern Arizona's Urte Kazakeviciute won the 100 breast (1:04.03) and 200 breast (2:17.46) against Boise State and Nevada.
Other diver nominees: New Mexico State's Abby Watson placed fifth on the platform (209.15) at the Air Force Invite… Grand Canyon's Menna El Midany finished 11th on the 1 meter (242.50) and 13th on the 3 meter (237.35) at the Shamrock Invitational.
