UTAH VALLEY'S AMES NAMED WAC ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
Utah Valley's Shevaun Ames has been named the Western Athletic Conference women's Cross Country Athlete of the Week for Oct. 2-8.
A senior from Lewiston, Idaho, Ames notched the first win of her senior campaign in the 4K at the Southern Utah Color Country Invitational with a time of 14:28.70 to place first of 51 runners. Her victory helped the Utah Valley women's cross country team earn a team victory with 20 points, easily beating Idaho State in second place with 59 points. Ames led a trio of 1-2-3 finishers for UVU, which secured seven of the Top 10 spots for the second meet in a row.
Other Nominees: Grand Canyon's Erika Wallace ran an 18:39 in the 5k at the Mesa Community College Thunderbird Classic to finish first of 41 runners.
ALL EIGHT TEAMS IN ACTION THIS WEEKEND
All eight WAC teams are in action this weekend. On Friday, Chicago State travels to Peoria, Ill., for the Bradley Pink Classic, while UT Rio Grande Valley will participate in the Crimson Classic in Tuscaloosa, Ala. On Saturday, five teams - CSU Bakersfield, Grand Canyon, NM State, Seattle U and Utah Valley - travel to Santa Clara, Calif., for the Bronco Invitational, while Kansas City heads to Louisville, Ky., for Pre-Nationals. It is the final competition before the WAC Championships.
REGIONALLY RANKED
Three men's teams and one women's team are listed in the Oct. 3 USTFCCCA Regional Cross Country rankings. The Kansas City men are ranked ninth in the Midwest Region. In the Mountain Region, Utah Valley is ranked 11th, while NM State is 13th. On the women's side, Utah Valley is ranked 15th in the Mountain Region.
WAC CHAMPIONSHIPS
The 2017 WAC Cross Country Championships are in Las Cruces, N.M. and will be hosted by NM State. The event will take place at the NMSU Golf Course. The Kansas City men look to repeat as champions while the Utah Valley women will attempt a three-peat.
NCAA REGIONALS
The 2017 Cross Country Regionals will be held at nine sites throughout the country on Friday, Nov. 10. WAC teams will be represented in four locations. The West Region will be held in Seattle (Host: Washington), the Mountain Region will be held in Logan, Utah (Host: Utah State), the South Central Regional will take place in College Station, Texas (Host: Texas A&M) and the Midwest Region will take place in Ames, Iowa (Host: Iowa State).
