MEN'S ATHLETES OF THE WEEK: OCT. 17-23
Grand Canyon's Daniil Antipov and Air Force's Cole Armagost have been named Western Athletic Conference Men's Swimmer and Diver of the Week, respectively, for Oct. 17-23.
Antipov, a junior from Krasnoyarsk, Russia, led his team to victory in the dual meet against both Loyola Marymount and Seattle U. He won four individual events and tallied on two more wins as part of a relay team. Antipov recorded a 1:40.63 time in the 200 free event for a time that is the third best in the WAC. He then recorded a time of 20.59 in the 50 free event which is second best in the WAC. He also won the 100 fly (49.63) and 200 fly (1:50.35) individually. Antipov then helped his relay team win the 200 free (1:23.78) and the 400 free (3:04.98).
Armagost, a freshman from Pappillon, Neb., finished first in the three-meter board event against Denver with a score of 280.28. He then finished third in the one-meter event (248.85). The next day he competed in the tri-meet against Colorado School of Mines and Colorado Mesa and posted a score of 293.25 in the one-meter board event to take home the victory.
WOMEN'S ATHLETES OF THE WEEK: OCT. 17-23
Grand Canyon's Samiha Mohsen and NM State's Raina Brommer have been named Western Athletic Conference Women's Swimmer and Diver of the Week, respectively, for Oct. 17-23.
Mohsen, a junior from Cairo, Egypt, helped her team come out victorious in the dual meet over Seattle U and Loyola Marymount. She won the 50 free event in both meets posting times of 23.42 and 23.87. Mohsen's time was the highest rated swim in the free event for the WAC this week. She then also won the 100 free event in both meets recording times of 51.94 and 52.56. Mohsen then helped her relay team win the 200 medley with a time of 1:46.50 and the 200 free recording a time of 1:38.21.
Brommer, a junior from Riverside, Calif., competed in both the three-meter and one-meter board events and finished second and third in the team loss to Wyoming. She had the second highest score in the three-meter event with a 280.43 score. Brommer then posted the third highest score in the one-meter event with a score of 242.55.
OTHER ATHLETES OF THE WEEK NOMINEES
Other men's swimmer nominees: Air Force's Zach Nelson took home two individual victories in the dual meet against Denver posting times of 58.29 in the 100 breast event and 2:06.55 in the 200 breast event… CSU Bakersfield's Kris Rogic lowered his season best by one tenth of a second while winning the 100 back (20.15) against UNLV and he finished second in the 200 back (1:51.90), 200 individual medley (1:56.12) and helped his team finish second in the 200 medley relay (1:32.54… Seattle U's Mitchell Crossen won the 100 free on both days of the weekend meet with Grand Canyon posting times of 46.94 and 46.17 and took second in the 50 free (21.10) as well as third in the 200 free (1:43.74)… UNLV's Dylan Tarazona won both of his individual races with a victory in the 50 free (20.63) and 100 fly (48.71) and then helped claim two relay victories including 200 medley relay (1:31.88) and 400 free relay (3:02.75).
Other women's swimmer nominees: NM State's Reagan Nentwich finished first in the 100 fly (57.77) and second in the 200 fly (2:09.49) against Wyoming… Seattle U's Bryn Lasher won the 100 fly (57.47) for the seventh-fasted time in program history as well as took second in both the 200 fly (2:06.50) and the 200 medley relay (1:50.27).
Other men's diver nominees: CSU Bakersfield's Adam Estrella won the three-meter event with a score of 251.48 and then went to finish third in the one-meter event posting a score of 239.40… UNLV's Robert Morgan took home the win in the one-meter event (306.38) and third in the three-meter event (210.90).
Other women's diver nominee: CSU Bakersfield's Hannah Chernabaeff placed fifth in the one-meter board with 215.48 points and fourth on the three-meter board with 228.83 points.
THIS WEEK IN WAC SWIMMING AND DIVING
AIR FORCE
The Air Force men's swimming and diving team won five events, but fell to Denver, 165-135. Before swimming began, the divers won both of their events. Senior Nicholas Piontek won the 1m and took second on 3m, while newcomer Cole Armagost won his first collegiate event on 3m and placed third on 1m. Erich Drollinger dove for a third-place finish on 3m and fourth on 3m. Rounding out the foursome representing Air Force, Kevin Lecours placed fourth on 3m and sixth on 1m. Other highlights of the night included impressive wins in the breaststroke events by sophomore Zach Nelson. Nelson won the 100 breaststroke in 58.29 and 200 breast in 2:06.55. Freshman Ben Settle earned the first collegiate win of his career in the 200 backstroke with a time of 1:51.49.
The Air Force men's swimming and diving team opened their first home meet of the season by defeating Colorado School of Mines (178-56) and Colorado Mesa (150-91). The Falcons won all but two events with several freshmen won the first collegiate events of their careers. Eric Orr dominated both the 100 freestyle (47.40) and 200 freestyle (1:43.67). Jake Allen won the 200 IM in 1:58.92, while Matt Serra earned his first-place finish in the 100 butterfly (50.32). Adding to their previous collegiate wins so far this year, Ben Settle swam for first in the 100 backstroke (53.06), Peter Lochmaier posted the fastest time in the 1000 freestyle in 10:01.97, and diver Cole Armagost won the 1 meter springboard (293.25). Falcon veterans also swam to their own first-place finishes. Sophomore Cole McAnany won the 50 free in 20.87. In the 100 breaststroke, Air Force earned the top three finishes led by senior Derek Brecht (58.23), senior Lars Knutson (58.57), and sophomore Andrew Weiss (59.13). The 200 medley relay, made up of freshmen Daniel Keith, Jack Ayers, Serra, and senior Knutson, opened the meet with a victory in a time of 1:34.67. Consisting of all freshmen (Orr, Vinny Vivadelli, Settle, and Ryan Klein), the men's 200 free relay closed the meet with a second-place finish in 1:26.90.
CSU BAKERSFIELD
The CSU Bakersfield men's swimming and diving team lost to UNLV 182-111. Kris Rogic, a freshman from Croatia, continues to impress for the `Runners. Rogic won the 100 backstroke with a time of 50.15, which was .10 better than last weekend when the freshman won the event against Pacific. Rogic also finished second in the 200 IM (1:56.12) and second in the 200 back (1:51.90) Despite the tough result, CSUB's Director of swimming and diving, Chris Hansen, was still able to see the positive results from a certain few on the squad. The two freshmen divers, Adam Estrella and Andrew Huerts, both finished the diving events with personal bests. Estrella won the three meter diving event with a score of 251.48 and finished third in the one meter diving event (39.40). Huerta had a score of 193.80 in the one meter and 200.03 in the three meter dive to finish fourth in both events. Loren Gillilan, a freshman from Fort Collins, CO, finished second in the 100 freestyle (46.49), third in the 50 yard freestyle (21.20). Senior Lovre Soric won the 200 IM with a winning time of 1:53.87 and finished third in the 200 freestyle (1:42.93). Jake Chir, a junior from Henderson, NV, swam a 57.30 in the 100 backstroke and a 2:08.13 in the 200 breaststroke to finish third in both events. Sophomore Noah Hultner finished second in the 1000 freestyle with a time of 9:46.52.
The CSU Bakersfield women's swimming and diving team was lost to UNLV 194-101. Jayssie Haynes, a sophomore from San Jose, won the 200 IM (2:11.11), finished third in the 200 freestyle (1:54.28) and the 500 free (5:07.34). Sophomore Maddie Cosgrove won the 200 butterfly with a time of 2:07.67. Haynes and Cosgrove, along with Alisa Cooke and Alexis Cannon won the 400 freestyle relay with a winning time of 3:37.83. Sophomore Alyssa Madero swam a 2:08.98 in the 200 backstroke to finish second in the event. Summer D'Arcy, a junior from Redlands, Calif, finished second in the 100 breaststroke (1:07.33). Sophomore Morgan King finished second in the 100 butterfly with a time of 58.21.
GRAND CANYON
The Grand Canyon men's and women's swimming and diving team continued their success on day two of the dual meet, defeating both Loyola Marymount University and Seattle University for the second consecutive day. The men's team defeated the Redhawks from Seattle University 130-74 while the women defeated Seattle 144-60. The women's team also defeated the Lions from Loyola Marymount 147-57. Pretty well was an understatement, as the Lopes dominated Saturday morning with the men winning 10 out of their 11 events while the women won all 11. Sophomore Wiktor Jaszczak had an outstanding day for the men's team. The Wroclaw, Poland native took first in both the 500 Yard Freestyle (4:44.00) and in the 1000 Yard Freestyle (9:47.03). Daniil Antipov also had an impressive Saturday for the Lopes as the junior from Krasnoyarsk, Russia won both the 200 Yard Butterfly (1:50.35) and the 50 Yard Freestyle (20.59) and contributed to the first place finish in the 400 Yard Freestyle Relay (3:04.98) with Mazen El Kamash, Viktor Kertesz and Mark Nikolaev. Estela Davis Ortiz and Alyssa Christianson were a few of the many bright spots for the Lopes women's team. Davis Ortiz, the senior from Ciudad Juarez, Mexico, took first in the 200 Yard Butterfly (2:04.55) and contributed to the 200 Yard Medley Relay (1:46.50) with Marina McInelly, Samiha Mohsen and Alyssa Christianson, while Christianson, the sophomore from Montrose, Colorado also finished first in the 200 Yard IM (2:08.09) and in the 200 Yard Breaststroke (2:21.06).
NM STATE
NM State swimming and diving fell to Wyoming. Junior MacKinna Hauff finished second in the one-meter event with a score of 258.70. Raina Brommer came in third place with a score of 242.55 while Sheridan Decker finished fourth with a final score of 240.70. The team of Eliana Beaudry, Hanna McGowan, Reagan Nentwich and Picabo Bender placed second in the 400 medley relay, clocking in at 3:55.89. Gabrielle Sanchez, Lauren Wood, Katherine Harston and Johanna Pettersson finished in fourth with a time of 3:58.74. In the 1000 free, Lilly Araujo finished third with a time of 10:52.26 while Alix Knagg came in fourth with a time of 10:57.57. Melissa Rogers closed out the event in sixth-place, posting a time of 11:29.02. Picabo Bender won the 200 free for the second consecutive week with a time of 1:54.49. Grace Laporte (2:00.99) and Sina Wegel (2:02.45) finished fifth and sixth, respectively. In the 100 back event, Beaudry came in third for the Aggies when she recorded a time of 58.54. Gabrielle Sanchez finished with a time of 59.70, which was good for fourth-place. Pettersson clocked at1:01.15 for a sixth-place finish. McGowan finished in second for NM State with a time of 1:05.16. Wood (1:06.55) finished just behind in third while Ashley Reynolds (1:08.14) finished fifth. Nentwich clocked a time of 2:09.49 for second in the 200 fly. Harston came in third with a time of 2:09.61 while Lanie McAlpin finished fifth with a final time of 2:12.68. In the 50 free event, Hatfield finished a close second after posting a time 24.73 followed by Makena Sutherland in third with a time of 25.03. Freshman Olivia Bender placed fourth, clocking a time of 25.12. Brommer concluded the three-meter board event with a final score of 280.30 to finish second while Hauff came in third with a time of 261.10. Picabo Bender finished second in the 100 free clocking in at 53.69, followed by Hatfield in fifth with a time of 56.86. In the 200 back event, Knagg came in third, clocking a time of 2:08.04. Sanchez (2:09.77) and McAlpin (2:10.47) placed fourth and fifth, respectively. In the 200 breast, Wood held on for the win, clocking in a time 2:22.45. McGowan came in second with a posted time of 2:23.81. Barbora Krizanova finished in fifth with a time of 2:31.53. NM State's Picabo Bender finished the 500 free event in fourth, posting a time of 5:14.11. Laporte was not too far behind with a time of 5:17.87 for fifth. Nentwich brought home the win for the Aggies in the 100 fly, recording a time of 57.77. Harston came in third with a time of 59.07 while Beaudry swam a time of 59.85 to finish fourth. In the 200 IM, Knagg posted a time of 2:11.93 for first. Wood finished second, clocking at 2:12.67 with McAlpin coming in third for a time of 2:13.53. In the 200 free relay, the team of Ruby Rodriguez, Hatfield, Sutherland and Pettersson finished in the top spot with a final time of 1:38.44 for NM State. Olivia Bender, Lindsey Muiznieks, Beaudry and McGowan were a close second with a time of 1:40.77.
SEATTLE U
Seattle U men's swimming fell by a 130-74 decision to Grand Canyon. Mitchell Crossen won the 100 freestyle with a 46.17, closing with a terrific 24.00 to take first. The showing is the 10th-best in Seattle U history. Greg Raper finished third in the 100 freestyle with a 47.72 performance. Crossen's 50 freestyle time of 21.10 was good for a personal best, as well as second place Saturday. Austin Barnard and Luke Christensen took second and third, respectively, in the 1000 freestyle Saturday. Barnard's time of 10:01.49 was good for runner-up, with Christensen touching in 10:13.01. Jack Baldoni touched the wall in 1:55.33 to take second in the 200 butterfly, a spot in front of Shawn Fujii, who grabbed third with a time of 1:55.80 Saturday. In the 200 freestyle, Alex Roderick recorded a 1:45.36 to finish second. Zach Zenteno(1:45.93) and Jake Goguen (1:47.62) placed third and fourth, respectively. Roderick and Barnard claimed second and third, respectively, in the 500 freestyle. Roderick clocked in with a 4:48.17 and Barnard posted a 4:52.45 time. Morgan Montemayor won silver in the 200 backstroke, finishing in 1:54.35 for SU. Ben Nussbaum put up a 1:57.71 in the 200 IM, claiming second for the Redhawks. He also took runner-up honors in the 200 breaststroke, swimming a 2:08.33.In the 200 medley relay, Montemayor, Nussbaum, Baldoni, and Raper combined for a 1:35.49 showing, placing second in the race.
Seattle U women's swimming won at Loyola Marymount, 114-90. The Redhawks also dropped a 144-60 decision to Grand Canyon at LMU. Bryn Lasher continued her stellar start to the season with a 2:06.50 in the 200 butterfly, logging the seventh-fastest time in school history. She finished second in the race Saturday morning, just ahead of Maddie Rapp, who tallied a 2:10.97 time for third place. Madi Lydig finished second in the 1000 freestyle, notching a 10:48.76 performance. In the 200 backstroke, Lydig placed second with a 2:05.86. In the 50 freestyle, freshman Allison Plamondon sprinted to a 24.49 effort, taking second in the event. The team of Jennifer Wong, Margaux Thompson, Lasher, and Paige Treff placed second in the 200 medley relay, posting a 1:50.27 time.
UNLV
The UNLV men's swimming and diving team topped CSU Bakersfield 182-111. Brad Gonzalez took both distance events of the meet, thanks to times of 4:33.43 in the 500 and 9:11.85 in the 1000 free. Francois Van Wynesberghe swept the breast events, posting times of 56.62 in the 100 and 2:06.02 in the 200. Dylan Tarazona was another double-event winner, taking the 50 free in 20.63 and the 100 fly in 48.71. was the 200 free winner in 1:39.85. Avi Cohen was the winner of the 200 fly in 1:50.49. Robert Morgan claimed the 1-meter diving with a score of 306.38. Or Sabatier finished first in the 100 free (45.79). Forrest Beesley finished with a win in the 200 back (1:50.12). UNLV won the 200 medley relay in 1:31.88, thanks to the quartet of Beesley, Van Wynsberghe, Tarazona and Sabatier. The 400 free relay team of Beesley, Sabatier, Rob Gilchrist and Tarazona would have won the race by eight seconds (3:02.75), but swam as an exhibition.
WAC CHAMPIONSHIP
The 2018 WAC Swimming and Diving Championship returns to Houston, Texas. Last year Air Force won its second straight WAC Men's Swimming & Diving Championship while Northern Arizona took home the women's crown for the fourth straight year.
