DENVER - UMKC's Tom Kruse and UTRGV's Dominique Ibarra been named the Western Athletic Conference Tennis Players of the Week, respectively, for Feb. 20-26.
Kruse, a freshman from Flensburg, Germany went undefeated in singles on the week. He won 6-2, 7-6, (10-1) against Omaha, beat Nebraska 6-1, 2-6, 6-4, and was ahead (6-0, 2-0) against South Dakota State when the match was clinched. Kruse also won two doubles matches with partner Airam Castellano against duos from Omaha (6-4) and South Dakota State (6-2).
Ibarra, a sophomore from Barcelona, Spain, went undefeated this week with two singles and two doubles victories. She defeated Lamar (6-0, 7-5) and Sam Houston State (6-3,7-5) in singles. She teamed up with partner Marine Darzyan in doubles to beat Lamar (7-6 (6)) and Sam Houston State (6-0).
Other male nominees: UTRGV's Jehonatan Kaufman picked up a win in singles over Incarnate Word… New Mexico State's Enrique Asmar defeated New Mexico in singles… GCU's Lorenzo Fucile had two singles wins over San Francisco and Santa Clara… Chicago State's Felix Savard went undefeated this week with three singles wins and three doubles wins over Prairie State, McKendree, and William Jewell.
Other female nominees: GCU's Tatum Prudhomme won one singles match and one doubles match over Southern Utah… New Mexico State's Vanessa Valdez won her singles matches over Stephen F. Austin and UT Arlington and also picked up a win in doubles over Stephen F. Austin… UMKC's Mariam Kurasbediani won her singles match and her doubles match against South Dakota State.
