WAC Announces Response to GCU-CSUB Women's Basketball Altercation

DENVER
- In response to the altercation which occurred during the Grand Canyon at CSU Bakersfield women's basketball game on Feb. 4, 2017, the Western Athletic Conference conducted a thorough investigation of all available information and an analysis of applicable NCAA and WAC provisions. The inquiry resulted in the following:

• Grand Canyon student-athletes Marina Laramie and Zelor Massaquoi will serve automatic one-game suspensions per their ejections for fighting in accordance with NCAA Rule 10, Section 5, Article 1. Both will serve their suspensions on Thursday, Feb. 9, during Grand Canyon's game at UT Rio Grande Valley.

• CSU Bakersfield student-athlete Tylinn Carter will serve an automatic one-game suspension per her ejection for fighting in accordance with NCAA Rule 10, Section 5, Article 1. She will serve her suspension on Thursday, Feb. 9, during CSU Bakersfield's game at NM State.

• CSU Bakersfield student-athlete Alexxus Gilbert will serve a two-game suspension, which includes an automatic one-game suspension per her ejection for fighting in accordance with NCAA Rule 10, Section 5, Article 1 and a one-game suspension for violation of WAC Sportsmanship Policy. She will serve her suspension on Thursday, Feb. 9 and Saturday, Feb. 11.

• CSU Bakersfield student-athlete Jerice Fears will serve a one-game suspension for leaving the bench and participating in the altercation in violation of WAC Sportsmanship Policy. She will serve her suspension on Thursday, Feb. 9, during CSU Bakersfield's game at NM State.

• Additional players from both institutions ejected from the game for leaving the bench are not subject to additional penalty under NCAA Rule 10, Section 4, Article 8.

• All parties are hereby put on notice that any further unsporting behavior shall be subject to more stringent disciplinary measures in accordance with the relevant provisions of the NCAA Women's Basketball Playing Rules and WAC Sportsmanship Policy, and pursuant to the applicable statutes of limitation.

The Conference office would like to recognize the cooperative and professional manner in which both institutions addressed this incident. The Western Athletic Conference will have no further comment.
