DENVER - New Mexico State's Cristofer Goncalves and Chicago State's Mariya Kostyuk have been named the Western Athletic Conference Tennis Players of the Week, respectively, for Jan. 30- Feb. 5.
Goncalves, a junior from Barquisimeto, Venezuela won two flight 1 singles matches on the week. He won 6-2, 6-1 against UC Riverside and won 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 against Weber State. He was also leading 7-6 (10-0), 3-1 against Youngstown when the match was halted. He teamed up with Luis Flores in flight 1 doubles, winning 3 of 4 matches. They beat UC Riverside (6-0), Youngstown State (6-3), and Weber State (7-6(3-0)).
Kostyuk, a junior from Kyiv, Ukraine, won all three flight 2 singles matches this week. She beat UIC (6-2,6-3), Northern Illinois (6-4, 4-6, 1-0) and Green Bay (6-4, 6-1). She also competed flight 1 in doubles with partner Leshia Gadacz, winning 6-3 against Green Bay.
Other male nominees: Grand Canyon's Lorenzo Fucile won two singles matches against UC Irvine and UC San Diego… UMKC's Airam Castellano won a singles match and a doubles match against Baker… UTRGV's Kolby Jansen won one singles match and one doubles match against Texas A&M- Corpus Christi.
Other female nominees: UMKC's Mariam Kurasbediani won a singles match and a doubles match against UConn… UTRGV's Dominique Ibarra won one singles match against Texas A&M- Corpus Christi.
