UVU'S STEVERSON, CSUB'S EVANS NAMED WAC ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
Utah Valley's Lyndsay Steverson and CSU Bakersfield's Summer Evans have been named the Western Athletic Conference Hitter and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, for March 13-19. This is the first-ever honor for both.
Steverson, a freshman second baseman from Mesa, Ariz., hit .538 with five extra-base hits, six runs scored and six RBIs last week. She posted a 1.385 slugging percentage and .571 on-base percentage as she tallied a trio of home runs on the week to bring her season total to a WAC-best eight on the season. All eight of her round trippers have come in the Wolverines' last eight games and she has also tallied three two-home run games during that stretch. Steverson's third two-homer game came in a 14-3 run-rule victory over Maine last Tuesday, as she went a perfect 3-for-3 with two home runs, two runs scored and four RBIs. The Wolverine second baseman also added a pair of 2-for-3 outings in a doubleheader against Wagner on Wednesday, which gave her a total of three multi-hit games on the week.
Evans, a junior left-hander from Escondido, Calif., went 1-0 with a 0.00 ERA in one appearance last week. She pitched her most impressive performance of the year against San Diego last Saturday, earning her fifth complete game and first shutout of the season in an 8-0 victory over the Toreros. Evans scattered seven hits over seven innings and allowed only one walk to USD while striking out two in the win. Evans has now been the pitcher of record for all of CSUB's four wins this season.
Other Hitter of the Week nominees included: CSU Bakersfield's Julea Cavazos hit .400 with two doubles and four RBIs on the week ... Kendsey Hill of Grand Canyon hit .545 with one double and one RBI ... NM State's Caity Szczesny hit .545 with two doubles and two RBIs ... CSUB'S BURT APPROACHING SEASON STOLEN BASE RECORD
CSU Bakersfield junior Kaylynn Burt now has 11 steals on the season. She is four shy of the program single-season record set by Alex Simmons last year.
UTAH VALLEY OFFENSIVE ERUPTION
The Utah Valley offense has erupted for 16 home runs, 29 extra-base hits, 62 runs scored and a .368 team batting average en route to a 6-2 record over its last eight games. Freshman Lyndsay Steverson and senior Brittney Vansway have led the way by combining to belt out 13 of UVU's 16 home runs during the stretch. Steverson has hit out eight herself, including three, two-home run games, while Vansway has belted out five. During the eight-game stretch, Steverson is hitting .538 with eight homers, two doubles, 16 RBIs and 11 runs scored, while Vansway is batting .520 with five round trippers, three doubles, 18 RBIs and 11 runs scored.
SEATTLE U'S REUBLE THROWS PERFECT GAME
Seattle U senior right-hander Alyssa Reuble threw a perfect game in Seattle U's 8-0 five-inning win over South Dakota on March 10. She needed just 41 pitches to blank the Coyotes. Reuble's gem was the first perfect game in Division I this season and the first by a WAC pitcher since the 2010 season. It also marks just the third perfect game in program history.
UVU'S VANSWAY LEADS NATION IN RBIS PER GAME
In the most recent NCAA statistical rankings, Utah Valley's Brittney Vansway leads the nation with 1.82 runs batted in per game. The senior has tallied 31 RBIs through 17 games this season. The senior third baseman also leads the WAC in sacrifice flies (4) and ranks second in home runs (6), batting average (.415) and slugging percentage (.849).
