DENVER - New Mexico State's Christofer Goncalves and UMKC's Katie Fries have been named the Western Athletic Conference Tennis Players of the Week, respectively, for Feb. 27- March 5.
Goncalves, a junior from Barquisimento, Venezuela went 3-0 in singles matches on the week. He defeated opponents from Texas A&M- Corpus Christi (6-4, 0-6, 6-2) and Louisiana (7-6, 3-6, 6-4). He was also leading (6-3, 5-4) against Arizona when the match was left unfinished. In doubles, he teamed up with partner Luis Flores to defeat Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (6-3). The duo was tied against Louisiana (4-4) when the match was left unfinished.
Fries, a sophomore from Overland Park, Kan., went 2-0 in UMKC's wins over Idaho State and UTSA. In singles, she defeated opponents from Idaho (6-2, 6-1) and opponents from UTSA (6-3, 6-1).
Other male nominees: UTRGV's Elliot Johnstone went 2-1 overall with a singles victory over UTSA and win in doubles against DePaul.
Other female nominees: Seattle U's Barbara Carey won one singles match and one doubles match against San Diego Christian.
