LAS VEGAS - After a closely contested first half, fourth-seeded Utah Valley pulled away midway through the second half to defeat No. 5-seed Seattle U in the quarterfinals of the WAC Tournament Thursday. The Wolverines advance to Fridays' semifinals to face top-seeded CSU Bakersfield at 6 p.m.
Neither team shot the ball well, as Seattle U connected on 39 percent from the field, while Utah Valley shot 37 percent. But the Wolverines were 23-of-35 at the free throw line compared to the 3-of-8 of the Redhawks. Utah Valley also dominated the glass, 46-26, including 12-3 on the offensive end.
Jordan Poydras led the Wolverines with 15 points, while Ivory Young added 11, including a pair of back-to-back three-pointers in the second half that swung the momuntum the way of Utah Valley for good. Andrew Bastian pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds.
Seattle U's William Powell led all players with 16 points, while Brendan Westendorf and Matej Kavas added 14 points apiece.
