NM STATE'S HORTON, UTAH VALLEY'S FRAILEY NAMED WAC ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
NM State's Kelsey Horton and Utah Valley's Lauren Frailey have been named the Western Athletic Conference Hitter and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, for April 3-9. This is the second honor of the season and third of her career for Horton and the second honor of the season and of her career for Frailey.
Horton, a sophomore second baseman from San Clemente, Calif., hit .600 with four extra-base hits and six RBIs last week. She hit three home runs and a double with two walks and four runs scored over in three games. Horton recorded an impressive 1.600 slugging percentage and a .667 on-base clip. She opened the week with a 2-for-2 performance with a double and one run scored in the series opener at Seattle U. In the second game of the series, Horton tied the program and WAC records by hitting three home runs in the Aggies' 14-6 victory over the Redhawks. She hit homers in three straight at-bats, becoming the first WAC player to do so in a conference game since 2010. In WAC games, Horton leads the league with a .632 batting average.
Frailey, a junior right-hander from Tooele, Utah, went 2-0 with a 1.40 ERA and eight strikeouts to lead Utah Valley to a series victory over CSU Bakersfield. Frailey pitched in all three ballgames in the series and tossed a total of 15.0 innings, which included two complete-game victories. In the opener against the ‘Runners, Frailey struck out a season-high six batters while allowing just five hits and two runs to help the Wolverines pull out a 6-2 win over CSUB. After two more scoreless innings of action in game two, Frailey then capped her strong weekend with a three-hit gem in which she gave up just one run and struck out one on the way to tossing her second complete-game victory of the series. Frailey is now 7-5 on the season with a 3.05 ERA and seven complete games.
Other Hitter of the Week nominees included: CSU Bakersfield's Chris Hipa hit .750 with a pair of doubles and three RBIs ... Jenna Coates of Grand Canyon hit .333 with a pair of home runs doubles and five RBIs on the week ... UMKC's Kelsey Goodwin hit .429 with one RBI ... Madison Cathcart of Seattle U hit .600 with one double, one homer and five RBIs last week ... Utah Valley's Basia Query hit .833 with one double, one homer and one RBI on the week.
Other Pitcher of the Week nominees included: Grand Canyon's Taylor Nowlin went 1-1 with a 2.10 ERA and 13 strikeouts ... Lynsey Conner of UMKC went 1-1 with a 3.11 ERA and two strikeouts ... NM State's Kayla Green went 0-1 with a 3.42 ERA and three strikeouts over 14.1 innings.
UTAH VALLEY SURPASSES LAST YEAR'S WIN TOTAL
After going just 9-43 overall in 2016, UVU is off to a 10-16 start under first-year head coach TJ Hubbard this season to already surpass its win total from a year ago. Utah Valley holds its 10 wins in 2017 over CSU Bakersfield (two), Maine (two), Saint Mary's (two), Iowa State, Idaho State, Nevada and Wagner.
SEATTLE U EXTENDS WAC-LEADING TRIPLES TOTAL TO 13
With three triples during its series against NM State last weekend, Seattle U extended its WAC-leading total to 13 on the season. Five different players have posted triples this year for the Redhawks, led by Paige Bouska with six, which ranks fourth nationally. Meanwhile, Kaylee Ree, Maddy Kristjanson and Cherise Silvan have two apiece and Nicole Bolasky has one.
UTAH VALLEY'S VANSWAY BECOMES PROGRAM RBI LEADER
Utah Valley senior third baseman Brittney Vansway became the program all-time RBI leader with a four-RBI outing against CSU Bakersfield on April 7 at Wolverine Field. The outing gave her a total of 149 for her career, which passed the prior record of 148 held by Amanda Perez (2009-12). After driving in another run on April 8, Vansway now has a 150 runs batted in for her career, which includes a WAC-best 43 this season.
UMKC'S SWEEP OF CSUB JUST FOURTH EVER
When the Roos swept UMKC in the opening weekend of WAC play, it was just the fourth time since joining the WAC that UMKC swept a conference opponent. The Roos also swept the Roadrunners and Seattle U in 2016 and swept Utah Valley in 2015.
SEATTLE U-GRAND CANYON PLAY 12-INNING GAME
On March 31, Seattle U and Grand Canyon played a 12-inning game with Seattle U winning 7-3. In the bottom of the 12th inning, the lights, which are on a timer, turned off, resulting in a 15 minute delay, as the lights must cool before being turned back on. The game was the longest in Seattle U program history and is tied for the sixth-longest in Division I this season.
SEATTLE U'S BOUSKA SETS PROGRAM CAREER HITS RECORD
Seattle U senior outfielder Paige Bouska became the program career hits leader on March 26 in a 5-3 win over Santa Clara and now has 216. Trailing 3-2 entering the bottom of the sixth inning, Bouska's triple to left drove in two runs and set the school record with her 209th career hit. She passed Jane Purdy and Isabella Geronimo, both of whom had 208 hits.
CSUB PICKS UP FIRST WIN AGAINST RANKED TEAM IN FOUR YEARS
CSU Bakersfield notched up its first win over a ranked opponent in exactly four years when it defeated No. 25 Cal Poly 11-8 on March 25. Chris Hipa led the way at the plate with a home run and a triple and five RBIs. The ‘Runners' previous win over a ranked team was March 25, 2013, when they defeated No. 24 Oregon State 10-7 at home.
UVU'S VANSWAY SETS PROGRAM RECORD FOR SACRIFICE FLIES
UVU senior Brittney Vansway became the all-time program leader in sacrifice flies with a third-inning sac fly against Idaho State on March 23 in Pocatello. With the sacrifice, Vansway now has a UVU-best five sacrifice flies on the season as well as an all-time best nine for her career. Her ninth career sac fly passed Jessica Anderson's (2008-10) previous record of eight.
CSUB'S BURT APPROACHING SEASON STOLEN BASE RECORD
CSU Bakersfield junior Kaylynn Burt now has 13 steals on the season. She is two shy of the program single-season record set by Alex Simmons last year.
SEATTLE U'S REUBLE THROWS PERFECT GAME
Seattle U senior right-hander Alyssa Reuble threw a perfect game in Seattle U's 8-0 five-inning win over South Dakota on March 10. She needed just 41 pitches to blank the Coyotes. Reuble's gem was the first perfect game in Division I this season and the first by a WAC pitcher since the 2010 season. It also marks just the third perfect game in program history.
UVU'S VANSWAY LEADS NATION IN RBIS PER GAME
In the most recent NCAA statistical rankings, Utah Valley's Brittney Vansway leads the nation with 1.65 RBIs per game. The senior has tallied 43 RBIs through 26 games this season. The senior third baseman also ranks fifth nationally in sacrifice flies (5), 15th in RBIs (43), 24th in home runs per game (0.31) and 35th in slugging percentage (.776).
