DENVER - UMKC's Marcus Johnson and Christopher Bryan have been named the Western Athletic Conference Men's Outdoor Track and Field Athletes of the Week, respectively, for April 17-23.
Johnson, a sophomore from Nixa, MO., had a great week competing at the Kansas Relays. After hanging in second place for most of the 3,000m Steeplechase, he picked up the pace to eventually take first place by 12 seconds, winning the event for the second straight meet and finishing with a PR time of 9:07.00. He now ranks second in UMKC program history, first in the conference, and 52nd in the NCAA West.
Bryan, a sophomore from St. Catherine, Jamaica, placed first in the long jump at the Kansas Relays. His wind-aided mark of 7.69m holds the top spot in the WAC by 0.41m. He is also currently ranked 23rd in the NCAA West.
Other Track Nominees: Grand Canyon's Isaac Allanarem won the 400m at the Triton Invitational with a new WAC-leading PR time… Chicago State's Ricordo McKenzie competed in the 100m for the first time at the CUC Cougar Invitational and placed second... CSU Bakersfield's Alec Benavides placed fourth and set a new PR in the 110m Hurdles at the Bulldog Open.
Other Field Nominees: Grand Canyon's Scott Marshall placed sixth in the pole vault at the Triton Invitational with a mark that is second to his own current WAC-leading mark in the event.
