DENVER- UMKC's Airam Castellano and Chicago State's Mariya Kostyuk have been named the Western Athletic Conference Tennis Players of the Week, respectively, for April 17-23.
Castellano, a junior from Gran Canaria, Spain, went 4-0 on the week in the Runners' two victories. He earned two singles wins over Oral Roberts (6-3, 6-4) and Saint Louis (7-5, 6-2). He is now the first player in program history to earn his 60th career singles victory, and this is only his junior year. He teamed up with Mike Psarros to earn two more victories in doubles over Oral Roberts (6-2) and Saint Louis (6-2). Castellano and Psarros are now 12-1 in No. 1 doubles.
Kostyuk, a junior from Kyiv, Ukraine earned two victories last week helping the Cougars defeat Valparaiso. She defeated her singles opponent (6-3, 6-4) and teamed up with Judit Aubets to win in doubles (6-1).
Other male nominees: Chicago State's Felix Savard earned a singles win over area foes UIC (6-3, 6-0).
Other female nominees: UMKC's Katie Fries went 1-0 with a singles win over Saint Louis (6-0, 6-3).
