SEATTLE U STAYS CLOSE TO HOME FOR NCAA REGIONAL
After winning their first WAC men's golf title, the Seattle U Redhawks won't have to travel far for their first NCAA Regional, making the trip across Lake Washington to Aldarra Golf Club in Sammamish, Wash. on May 15-17.
The Redhawks held off UMKC on the final day at Longbow Golf Club to win the trophy with a 15-over-par 867. Seattle U was led by a 1-under-par 212 from Kyle Cornett and an even-par 213 from Zach Overstreet. Following the championship, SU head coach Marc Chandonnet was named WAC Coach of the Year and Overstreet was named WAC Freshman of the Year.
Joining Seattle U in Sammamish will be top-seed USC, Kent State, Texas A&M, Florida State, Washington, Alabama, San Diego State, UTEP, Penn State, Michigan, Michigan State, Marquette and Bryant. The top five teams and the top individual not on one of those teams will advnace tot he national championship to be played May 26-31 at Rich Harvest Farms in Sugar Grove, Ill.
REDHAWKS WIN WAC MEN'S GOLF CHAMPIONSHIP
Led by a five-under-66 from freshman Zack Overstreet, Seattle U held on to win the 2017 WAC Men's Golf Championship on Sunday afternoon at Longbow Golf Club in Mesa, Ariz. Grand Canyon's Vinnie Murphy earned individual medalist honors with a 3-under-par 210.
Seattle U put together their best score of the championship to clinch the title with a 2-under-par 282 to finish with a 15-over-par 867. UMKC put together a strong run on the final day, using a 5-under-par 278 to finish four strokes back at 871. NM State took third with an 879, followed by Utah Valley (883), UT Rio Grande Valley (889), CSU Bakersfield (940) and Chicago State (985).
On the individual leaderboard, Murphy shot a 3-under-par 68 to finish two strokes ahead of Seattle U's Kyle Cornett, who took second with a 1-under-par 212. Overstreet tied for the tournament-low round with UMKC's McCain Schellhardt with a third-round 66 to finish in third with an even-par 213.
WAC MEN'S GOLF POSTSEASON HONORS ANNOUNCED
The 2016-17 All-WAC teams have been named following a vote of the WAC's eight head coaches. Grand Canyon's Vinnie Murphy was named WAC Player of the Year, Seattle U's Zack Overstreet was named WAC Freshman of the Year and Marc Chandonnet was named WAC Coach of the Year.
Murphy earned honors after leading the WAC in stroke average and winning the 2017 WAC Men's Golf Championship by two strokes with a 3-under-par 210. His low round of 67 came in the first round of the Redhawk Invitational and his consistency showed all season as 10 of his 33 rounds came in under par, including five rounds in the 60s.
Overstreet was named WAC Freshman of the Year after help lead Seattle U to the team title at the 2017 WAC Men's Golf Championship. He posted a 73.06 stroke average in his first collegiate season and took third at the conference championship, using a 5-under-par 66 in the final round to finish with an even-par 213.
Chandonnet earns his first WAC Coach of the Year honor after guiding the Redhawks to their first WAC men's golf title. A graduate of Grand Canyon, he has headed both the men's and women's golf programs at Seattle U since 2012.
Murphy and Overstreet also earned first-team All-WAC honors. Joining them on the first team are NM State's Luis Medina, Seattle U's Kyle Cornett and Utah Valley's Blair Bursey.
The All-WAC second team honorees are Grand Canyon's Jake Chanen and Billy Comeaux, UMKC's Francois Lagraulet, Seattle U's Ross Kukula and UT Rio Grande Valley's Casto Gomez-Ruiz.
TOP BIRDS
Seattle U won their first tournament of the season in the regular season finale, holding off both Fresno State and Oregon State to win the El Macero Classic in Davis, Calif. The Redhawks shot a 30-over-par 894 to finish one stroke ahead of the Bulldogs and Beavers. SU was led by a sixth-place finish from Patrick Sato.
GET HIM A MEDAL
GCU's Billy Comeaux had a great month of March after posting first place finishes in back-to-back tournaments. At the Sacramento State Intercollegiate on March 6-7, he carded at 4-under-par 212 to hold off teammate Vinnie Murphy and UC Santa Barbara's Brandon Bauman but just one stroke. A little less than two weeks later, he shot a 10-under-par 203 at the GCU Invitational to finish a stroke ahead of Duke's Alex Smalley and Eastern Michigan's Jared Multer.
WINNING WOLVERINES
Utah Valley opened up the spring with a dominating performance at the Pizza Hut Pat Hicks Invite in St. George, Utah. The Wolverines shot a 16-under-par 560 to win the tournament by nine strokes over Utah State. Senior JT Timmons led the Wolverines, shooting a 6-under-par 138 to finish in a tie for third place.
GRAND PERFORMANCE
Grand Canyon posted the first team win of the season when they took first at the Bill Ross Intercollegiate in Raymore, Mo. The Lopes shot a 4-over-par 868 to outlast Kansas State by one stroke and host UMKC by four strokes. GCU freshman Jake Chanen took medalist honors, shooting a 6-under-par 210 to finish one stroke ahead of K-State's Matt Green. Grand Canyon also earned the win at the Herb Wimberly Intercollegiate, shooting a 15-under-par 837. GCU's Matt McClung earned medalist honors with an 11-under-par 202. The Lopes' third win came at the Sacramento State Invitational, shooting a 2-under-par 862. Billy Comeaux took medalist honors with a 4-under-par 212.
