DENVER - UMKC's Marcus Johnson and Grand Canyon's Scott Marshall have been named the Western Athletic Conference Men's Outdoor Track and Field Athletes of the Week, respectively, for April 24-30.
Johnson, a sophomore from Nixa, MO., competed at the Rock Chalk Classic, taking first in the 3,000-meter Steeplechase for the second week in a row. He set a new Rock Chalk Park record with a PR time of 9:02.63 seconds. He ranks 43rd in the NCAA West Region, and remains first in the WAC and second in UMKC program history.
Marshall, a redshirt junior from Tempe, Ariz., won the pole vault at the Steve Scott Invitational this past weekend with a mark of 5.05 meters. He currently leads the conference.
Other Track Nominees: Grand Canyon's Sam Proctor set a new PR and school record taking second place in the 5,000 meter at the Steve Scott Invitational… Seattle U's Jacques Hebert set a new WAC-leading PR in the 1,500 meter at the OSU High Performance Meet… Utah Valley's Jason Lynch won the 5,000 meter at the BYU Robison Invitational... CSU Bakersfield's Gabe Gaeta placed third and set a new PR in the 400m Hurdles at the Fresno State Invitational.
Other Field Nominees: UMKC's Blake Hocking placed second in the shot put and fourth in the discus at the Rock Chalk Classic… UTRGV's Mar Gonzalez set a new PR in the triple jump placing sixth in the event at the Bobcat Classic… Utah Valley's Albert MacArthur placed second in both the triple jump and the long jump at the BYU Robison Invitational.
