WAC ATHLETES OF THE WEEK ANNOUNCED
Utah Valley's Tyson Lambert and McKayla Walker have been named the Western Athletic Conference men's and women's Cross Country Athletes of the Week, respectively, for Sept. 11-17.
Lambert, a senior from Grantsville, Utah, earned a victory for the second straight meet, winning the men's 8k at the UC Riverside Invitational. Lambert set a Utah Valley program course record on UCR's Ag/Ops 8K course with a time of 23:53.8, surpassing the record he set last year by 2.6 seconds. He also became the Wolverines' first individual in program history to win a race at UCR. Lambert beat 94 Division I runners and 262 overall from the Division I and non-Division I ranks.
Walker, a senior from Riverton, Utah, set a Utah Valley women's cross country program course record at UC Riverside Invitational with a time of 20:42.9 in the women's 6k, breaking teammate Savannah Berry's previous record on UCR's course at last season's meet by 3.4 seconds. Walker also shattered her previous personal record on the course by 43.8 seconds. Walker finished 16th among a pool of 98 Division I runners and 23rd overall against 219 Division I and non-Division I competitors.
Other Men's Nominees: Chicago State's Dijon Smith placed 11th with a time of 25:57.5 in the 8k at the Bradley Intercollegiate last Friday ... Brendan Wagler of Grand Canyon finished fifth out of 41 runners with a time of 19:4325 in the 6k at the Dave Murray Invitational as the GCU men's team finished the Invite ahead of Arizona State in the team rankings for the first time in program history ... NM State's Eli Kosgei ran a 21:26.03 in the 7k to finish second at the Kachina Classic ... Matthew Seidel of Seattle U finished 15th in 8k at the Sundogger Invitational with a time of 25:09.50.
Other Women's Nominees: Grand Canyon's Elizabeth Balson took eighth out of 45 runners at the Dave Murray Invitational with a time of 14:55.4 in the 4k ... Crissey Amberg of NM State took fifth at the Kachina Classic with a time of 17:57.19 in the 5k race ... Seattle U's Olivia Stein finished 20th at the Sundogger Invitational with a time of 21:43.29 in the 6k race.
TWO TEAMS IN ACTION THIS WEEKEND
Just two WAC teams are in action on Saturday, as UT Rio Grande Valley to Corpus Christi for the Island Splash, while Utah Valley heads to Las Vegas for the UNLV Invitational.
REGIONALLY RANKED
Four men's teams and two women's team are listed in the Sept. 18 USTFCCCA Regional Cross Country rankings. The UMKC men are ranked 14th in the Midwest Region. In the Mountain Region, Utah Valley is ranked 12th, while NM State is 14th. Grand Canyon entered the polls this week in the West Region at 13th. On the women's side, Utah Valley is ranked 14th in the Mountain Region, while UT Rio Grande Valley is ranked 15th in the South Central Region.
