MEN'S ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: JAN. 1-7
CSU Bakersfield's Lovre Soric and Grand Canyon's Nick Benson have been named Western Athletic Conference Men's Swimmer and Diver of the Week, respectively, for Jan. 1-Jan. 7.
Soric, a senior from Zagreb, Croatia, placed first in both individual events he competed in as well as helped his relay team to a second place finish this past weekend facing UC San Diego. Collegeswimming.com ranked both of his individual times as the top two swims of the meet. Soric finished the 200 free with a time of 1:41.64 and the 200 individual medley in 1:51.67. He later swam as the anchor in the 200 medley relay to help his team post a time of 1:32.96.
Benson, a sophomore from Maple Grove, Minn., placed second in both events he competed in this past weekend to help his team defeat California Baptist 162.50-136.50. On the one-meter dive, he posted a score of 275.50 then later on scored a 277.50 on the three-meter diving event.
WOMEN'S ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: JAN. 1-7
Grand Canyon's Diana Jaruskeviciute and NM State's Raina Brommer have been named Western Athletic Conference Women's Swimmer and Diver of the Week, respectively, for Jan. 1-Jan. 7.
Jaruskeviciute, a freshman from Kaunas, Lithuania produced two individual and two relay first place finishes as she helped her team defeat both NM State and California Baptist but fell short to Rice. Her best swim of the meet was the 50 free as she posted a time of 23.56 which was ranked second of the meet by collegeswimming.com. Then she competed in the 100 butterfly and finished with a time of 57.35. Jaruskeviciute was also part of two relay teams which the 400 free relay (3:28.29) broke the pool record by over three seconds. She also helped her 200 medley relay team finish in 1:44.39.
Brommer, a junior from Riverside, Calif., finished the weekend with three first place finishes competing against Arizona, Grand Canyon, Rice and California Baptist. On Friday, she posted a score of 288.95 in the three-meter diving event at Arizona. She then finished with a score of 276.95 in the one-meter event on Saturday, as well as a 291.90 in the three-meter event.
OTHER ATHLETES OF THE WEEK NOMINEES
Other men's swimmer nominees: Grand Canyon's Mark Nikolaev finished first in three individual events and one relay event, including 100 back (47.65), 200 back (1:50.03), 200 individual medley (1:52.90) and 200 medley relay (1:28.85)… Seattle U's Mitchell Crossen won two individual events posting times of 1:43.94 in the 200 free and 46.97 in the 100 free, while finishing second in the 50 free with a time of 21.82 before helping his relay team finish first in the 400 free relay with a time of 3:13.64… Wyoming's Jack Herron swam pool records in the 200 fly (1:53.34) and the 500 free (4:42.52).
Other women's swimmer nominees: CSU Bakersfield's Maddie Cosgrove came in first in the 200 fly (2:05.57), second in the 100 free (52.54) and fifth in the 100 fly (58.94), while helping her 400 free relay team to a second place victory (3:34.72)… Northern Arizona's Monique King finished third in the 1,000 with a time of 10:14.90 and second in the 500 free (4:58.78)… Seattle U's Madi Lydig won three individual and helped with three relay events, including 100 back (59.89), 200 free (1:58.22), 500 free (5:03.72), 200 free relay (1:41.74), 400 free relay (3:41.55) and 400 medley relay (4:05.61).
Other men's diving nominee: CSU Bakersfield's Adam Estrella finished second in both the one-meter event with a score of 232.05 and the three-meter event with a season-best mark of 262.42.
Other women's diver nominees: CSU Bakersfield's Hannah Chernabaeff finished first in the one-meter diving event with a score of 253.65 and second in the three-meter event with a 243.00. Northern Arizona's Tatiana Kurach placed first in the one-meter diving event scoring a 303.50 over No. 17 Arizona, NM State and Rice, while also placing fourth in the three-meter event with a score of 275.55.
THIS WEEK IN WAC SWIMMING AND DIVING
CSU BAKERSFIELD
CSU Bakersfield men's swimming and dive team traveled to Loyola Marymount with the women's team but only swam against the UCSD Tritons. The men came just a little short as they only lost by 6 points, 150-144. UCSD has always been a tough team to beat and this year the `Runners were able to come very close and put the Tritons right where they wanted with only losing by six points. Lovre Soric paced the `Runners in first place in the 200 free and the 200 IM. Loren Gillilan finished at the top in the 50 free and the 100 butterfly and secured a second place finish in the 100 free by a little less than two seconds. Among the other top `Runners were sophomore Noah Hultner and junior Owen van Krimpen who raced in the 1000 freestyle and 500 freestyle together. Hultner placed first in the 1000 free and third in the 500 freestyle while van Krimpen finished first in the same event and second in the 1000 free.
CSU Bakersfield women's swimming and dive team traveled to Loyola Marymount to take on the Lions and UCSD Tritons. The women proved dominance over Loyola 238-50 but came up short against UCSD 191-109. Junior Sabrina Zavala finished in first place in the 1000 free style with a time of 10:29.41 and also the 500 free with a time of 5:09.96. Freshman and Long Beach Calif. native, Isabella Magalong, paced the `Runners for a first place finish in the 100 breast with a time 1:06.82 and finished in second place in the 200 breast as well as the 200 IM. Sophomore Jayssie Haynes continued to show power as she has been for the whole season and placed first in 200 free against both UCSD and Loyola and second in the 200 breasts and 200 IM only against UCSD but ended with a first-place finish against Loyola. Maddie Cosgrove competed in the 200 fly, 100 free and the 100 fly and managed to secure first place wins in all three events against the Lions. Hannah Chernabaeff was the top diver in the 1 meter dive with a score of 253.64 over both the Lion and Tritons but finished in second the 3 meter dive over UCSD.
GRAND CANYON
The Grand Canyon men's and women's swimming and diving team opened up 2018 with a home meet at the Fr Edward J. Reese Aquatic Center at Brophy Catholic College Preparatory. The men came out on top against California Baptist University by a score of (162.50-136.50), while the women went 2-1 on the day, defeating New Mexico State University (180.00-118.00), California Baptist University (178.00-110.00) and losing to Rice University (154.00-126.00). After a long break from competition, head coach Steve Schaffer was very pleased with his team and their all around performance. The men's 200 medley relay team consisting of Mark Nikolaev, Mazen El Kamash, Youssef El Kamash and Daniil Antipov added another accolade to their already impressive season, finishing in first with a time of (1:28.85). Noah Lambert, Mantas Auruskevicius, Owen Cameron and Cameron Carney finished in third place with a time of (1:35.95). Youssef El Kamash and Mantas Auruskevicius both placed in the 100 yard breaststroke with El Kamash winning the event with a time of (56.12) and Auruskevicius coming in third at (57.59). Mazen El Kamash also took first in the 100 yard freestyle with a final time of (46.09) while Mark Nikolaev won the 200 yard backstroke with a time of (1:50.03). Daniil Antipov lead the way in the 1000 yard freestyle with a first place time of (9:30.72) as well as the 200 yard butterfly with a time of (1:52.49), along with Mark Nikolaev winning the 100 yard backstroke with a time of (47.65), with Eran Ber (53.01) and Cameron Carney (53.09) finishing in third and fourth place. Bogdan Plavin also found him self in the winners circle, taking first in the 50 yard freestyle with a time of (21.05). In the 3 meter dive, both Nick Benson and Michael Winfrey played in the top six, with Benson finishing with second place score of (277.50) and Winfrey finishing in fourth with a score of (218.10). Benson also finished in second in the 1 meter dive, with a score of (275.50) while Winfrey finished tied for third with a score of (256.35).
Although the women's team did not win all three meets, Schaffer was happy with how his team competed. The women's 400 yard freestyle relay of Roaia Mashaly, Diana Jaruseviciute, Estela Davis Ortiz and Samiha Mohsen finished in first with a time of (3:28.29) while the women's 200 medley relay team consisting of Iryna Glavnykm Marina McInelly, Diana Jaruseviciute and Samiha Mohsen also finished on top with a first place time of (1:44.39). Glavnykm also finished first in the 100 yard backstroke with a time of (57.14) while Alyssa Christianson and Marina McInelly finished in second and third in the 100 yard breaststroke with times of (1:05.66) and (1:05.79). Jaruseviciute also took first in the 50 yard freestyle with a time of (23.56) and in the 100 yard butterfly with a time (57.35), with Christianson also finishing first in the 200 yard breaststroke with a winning time of (2:18.51). Estela Davis Ortiz earned a second place finish in the 200 yard butterfly with a time of (2:05.86) and also in the 200 yard backstroke with a time of (2:03.35). In the 3 meter dive, Menna Elmidany finished in third with a score of (209.20) and also finished in third in the 1 meter dive with a score of (234.50).
NM STATE
The NM State women's swimming and diving team completed its first meet of 2018 on Friday afternoon at the Hillenbrand Aquatic Center. The meet saw the team fall to Arizona, 168-122. In the 200-yard medley relay, Rice captured the top spot with a time of 1:44.35. Northern Arizona followed closely in second with a time of 1:45.99. NM State recorded a time of 1:49.29 to finish in fifth-place. Hannah Cox of Arizona posted the quickest time in the 1000-yard freestyle (10:02.01) with teammate Claire Lockridge coming in second (10:12.93). NAU's Monique King finished third with a time of 10:14.90. NM State's Katherine Harston closed out the event in 10th place with a time of 10:53.31. Arizona's Cox (1:49.53) and Cameron McHugh (1:50.26) finished first and second, respectively in the 200-yard freestyle event. Alicia Caldwell gave Rice a third-place finish when she recorded a time of 1:50.48. Picabo Bender posted a time of 1:55.19 to give the Aggies a seventh-place finish. NM State's Raina Brommer tallied a score of 288.95 to finish first in the three-meter diving category. NAU's Jenny Cheetham placed second with a score of 280.05, followed by Delaney Schnell in third for Arizona with a score of 278.95. In the 100-yard backstroke, Wildcat Daniela Georges completed the event in first-place with a time of 55.04, while Kaitlyn Swinney of Rice posted a time of 56.34 to finish second. NAU's Sarah O'Connor came in third-place with a time of 57.09. NM State's Eliana Beaudry recorded a time of 59.13 to come in eighth-place. Mallory Korenwinder posted the fastest time in the 100-yard breaststroke to secure first-place (1:03.76). Rice's Marie-Claire Schillinger (1:05.68) and Nicole Limberg (1:05.74) finished second and third, respectively. Hanna McGowan of NM State placed fifth (1:06.02) in the category. Arizona's Mackenzie Rumrill and NAU's Alina Staffeldt tied for first-place in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:01.99. Mikayla Raslem out of the Wildcat camp rounded out the top-three with a time of 2:02.28. Lanie McAlpin of the Aggies posted a time of 2:11.61 to finish 12th. At the conclusion of the 50-yard freestyle, Arizona's Morgan Ginnis placed first with a time 23.39. Lauren Rhodes gave Rice a second-place finish when she posted a time of 23.77, followed by Wildcat Zohar Shikler in third with a time of 23.78. NM State's Makena Sutherland placed 10th with a time of 25.43. Rice's Caldwell took home the top spot in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 50.96. Jamie Stone (51.13) and Ashley Sutherland (51.25) of Arizona finished second and third, respectively. P. Bender gave the Aggies a ninth-place finish when she recorded a time of 53.76. In the 200-yard backstroke, McHugh gave Arizona another first-place finish with a time of 1:57.86, followed by Swinney of Rice in second with a time of 2:01.63. Georges finished third with a time of 2:03.20, while NM State's Johanna Pettersson placed sixth overall when she recorded a time of 2:09.44. NAU's Tatiana Kurach placed first in the one-meter diving class with a score of 303.50, followed by Arizona's Schnell with a score of 280.85. Christina Torrente of NAU finished in third-place with a final score of 266.70. Sheridan Decker presented the Aggies with a fifth-place finish when she posted a score of 250.80. Korenwinder of Arizona placed first in the 200-yard breaststroke when she recorded a time of 2:20.20. Rice's Limberg (2:21.26) and Kelsey Evans (2:22.71) finished in second and third-place, respectively. Lauren Wood out of the NM State camp concluded the event in sixth-place with a time of 2:23.65. Kirsten Jacobsen closed out the 500-yard freestyle event for Arizona in first-place with a time of 4:57.36, while NAU's King came in second with a time of 4:58.78. Wildcat Jenna Bauer finished in third-place when she recorded a time of 5:01.46. P. Bender gave the Aggies an eighth-place finish when she posted a time of 5:10.83. The 100-yard butterfly category saw Kiley Beall of Rice claim the top spot with a time of 57.45. NAU's Staffeldt came in second-place with a time of 57.73 followed by Brittany Bui of Rice with a time of 58.16. Reagan Nentwich of NM State placed fifth when she posted a time of 58.96. In the 400-yard IM category, Swinney claimed first-place for Rice with a time of 4:17.86, while teammate Hanna Huston finished in second with a time of 4:32.84. Niamh McDonagh gave NAU a third-place finish when she recorded a time of 4:34.19. Alix Knagg gave the Aggies a fifth-place finish after she posted a time of 4:44.10. Rice took home first-place in the 400-yard freestyle relay with a time of 3:30.06, followed by NAU with a time of 3:34.25. NM State came in fourth-place with a final time of 3:38.61.
NM State's Raina Brommer and Sheridan Decker shined bright in the diving categories on Saturday afternoon as the Aggies wrapped up their weekend on the road at Grand Canyon. The meet saw the team prevail over Cal Baptist (170-128), but fall short to Rice (207-87) and GCU (180-118). NM State's Raina Brommer (276.95) and Sheridan Decker (234.75) placed first and second, respectively in the one-meter diving event. Grand Canyon's Mennattalah Elmidany finished third with a final score of 234.50. GCU's Iryna Glavnyk, Marina McInelly, Diana Jaruseviciute and Samiha Mohsen took home first-place in the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:44.39. Alicia Caldwell, Marie-Claire Schillinger, Kiley Beall and Lauren Rhodes from Rice placed second with a time of 1:46.00. Representing the Aggies in sixth-place were Eliana Beaudry, Hanna McGowan, Reagan Nentwich and Johanna Pettersson with a time of 1:49.70 In the 1000-yard freestyle, Claire Therien finished first for Rice with a time of 10:20.40, followed by Cal Baptist's Buse Topcu who posted a time of 10:20.81. Hanna Huston gave Rice a third-place finish with a time of 10:24.09. NM State's Katherine Harston placed sixth with a time of 10:45.83. Rice's Ellery Parish (1:52.74) and Lindsay Mathys (1:54.07) captured the top-two positions in the 200-yard freestyle. Cal Baptist's Christie Halverson finished third with a time of 1:54.83. Picabo Bender out of the Aggie camp finished sixth with a time of 1:55.34. Iryna Glavnyk gave Grand Canyon a first-place finish in the 100-yard backstroke when she posted a time of 57.14. Caldwell placed second with a time of 57.31, followed by Emily Longfellow from Cal Baptist with a time of 57.63. Eliana Beaudry gave the Aggies a sixth-place finish when she recorded a time of 59.52. Marie-Claire Schillinger completed the 100-yard breaststroke for Rice in first-place with a time of 1:05.04. Alyssa Christianson (1:05.66) and Marina McInelly (1:05.79) placed second and third, respectively, for GCU. For NM State, Hanna McGowan finished fifth with a time of 1:06.15. In the 200-yard butterfly category, Sofia Petrenko of Cal Baptist clinched first-place with a time of 2:05.38, while Grand Canyon's Estela Davis Ortiz came in second with a time of 2:05.86. Kaitlin Benjamin from Rice placed third with a time of 2:06.76. Harston recorded a time of 2:10.17, which earned her a sixth-place finish for the Aggies. GCU's Jaruseviciute finished the 50-yard freestyle in first-place with a time of 23.56. Lauren Rhodes (23.93) and Jaecey Parham (24.55) finished second and third, respectively, for Rice. Makena Sutherlandgave NM State a fifth-place finish when she posted a time of 25.18. Caldwell brought home first-place for Rice in the 100-yard freestyle category with a time 51.05. GCU's Samiha Mohsen finished second with a time of 52.32, while Rice's Rhodes finished third with a time of 52.58. P. Bender gave the Aggie camp a sixth-place finish with a time of 54.53. Kaitlyn Swinney from Rice placed first in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:01.44. GCU's Ortiz followed up in second with a time 2:03.35, while Parish placed third for Rice with a time of 2:03.42. Beaudry placed sixth for NM State when she recorded a time of 2:08.64. In the 200-yard breaststroke class, Grand Canyon's Christianson finished in first-place with a time of 2:18.51 while Nicole Limberg out of the Rice camp placed second with a time of 2:19.29. NM State's Lauren Wood came in third-place with a posted time of 2:20.71. Cal Baptist's Buse Topcu placed first in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:55.91, while Rice's Huston (5:05.57) and Kelsey Evans (5:06.13) placed second and third, respectively. P. Bender came in fifth place for the Aggies with a time of 5:09.86. Jaruseviciute of Grand Canyon nabbed the top spot in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 57.35. Petrenko of Cal Baptist finished second with a time of 57.60, followed by Rice's Parham in third with a time of 58.09. Reagan Nentwich posted a time of 58.69, which gave the Aggies a sixth-place finish. NM State's Brommer captured first-place in the three-meter diving category when she tallied a score of 291.90, while teammate Decker placed second with a final score of 238.70. GCU's Elmidany finished in third-place with a score of 209.20. In the 200-yard IM, Rice's Swinney (2:04.41) and Parham (2:06.88) placed first and second, respectively. Christianson (2:07.47) of GCU followed up in third-place. Wood of NM State recorded a time of 2:11.03, which was good for sixth-place. In the final event of the day, Grand Canyon's team of Jaruseviciute, Ortiz, Mohsen and Roaia Mashaly finished first in the 400-yard freestyle relay with a time of 3:28.29, followed by Rice's Parham, Rhodes, Caldwell and Lindsay Mathys with a time of 3:28.78. NM State's P. Bender, Laporte, Sina Wegeland Johanna Pettersson placed fifth in the event with a time of 3:38.32.
NORTHERN ARIZONA
The Northern Arizona swimming & diving team returned to the pool on Friday and received a number of strong performances in a 154.5-137.5 loss to No. 17 Arizona. The defeat was only the Lumberjacks' second dual meet loss this season, while they also fared well against both Rice and New Mexico State who were also among the teams competing at the Hillenbrand Aquatic Center. Among the notable swimmers were senior Alina Staffeldt, redshirt junior Monique King and freshman Sarah O'Connor. Staffeldt tied for first overall in the 200 fly (2:01.99) and placed fifth in the 100 fly (57.73). King's best finish was in the 500 freestyle where she posted a time of 4:58.78 to place second while she was alsothird in the 1,000 free with a time of 10:14.90. O'Connor also scored a pair of top four finishes in the backstrokes, placing third in the 100 (57.09) and fourth in the 200 (2:06.94). The divers were also exceptional, especially given the lengthy break and limited training time leading up to Friday's meet, with junior Tatiana Kurach and freshman Jenny Cheetham leading the way. Kurach claimed first overall on 1-meter with a score of 303.50 in addition to placing fourth overall on 3-meter. Meanwhile, Cheetham was second overall - but first when looking at head-to-head results with Arizona - on 3-meter recording a season-high score of 280.05. Cheetham also placed fourth on 1-meter. Juniors Raquel Gonzales and Christina Torrente also registered impressive finishes with Gonzales recording a fifth-place finish on 3-meter and Torrente placing third on 1-meter. On 3-meter, NAU had four of the top six divers, while the ‘Jacks placed three of the top four overall on 1-meter. The Lumberjacks opened the meet by placing fourth in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:45.99. Their 400 freestyle relay squad also placed fourth in the day's final event with a time of 3:34.25 Both of NAU's ‘A' relays placed ahead of New Mexico's ‘A' relays after finishing behind them in November during the team's official dual meet. Other impressive results included freshman Hope Williams finishing sixth overall, and third versus Arizona, in the 100 breaststroke (1:06.47). Freshman Niamh McDonagh and junior Andrea Schmidt tied for fifth overall in the 200 fly with identical times of 2:07.11. Staffeldt, McDonagh and Schmidt all finished ahead of Rice's best finisher in the 200 fly, as it was one of three events in which the Lumberjacks touched the wall before the Owls. King accounted for the other two in the two distance freestyle events. NAU also finished ahead of New Mexico State in 12 of 16 events.
SEATTLE U
Seattle Umen's swimming won, 181-62, at Pacific Lutheran Friday night. Jack Baldoni, Morgan Montemayor, and Greg Raper were both two-time winners to lead the Redhawks (2-2) to victory. In the 100 butterfly, Baldoni and Shawn Fujii placed at the top. Baldoni put up a 51.16 to claim first. Baldoni and Shawn Fujii went 1-2 in the 50 butterfly. Baldoni tallied a 22.99 to win the race. Raper posted a 21.69 in the 50 freestyle, winning the event. Mitchell Crossen and Isaac Parker finished second and third, respectively. Raper, Jake Goguen, and Alex Roderick claimed the top three spots in the 100 freestyle Friday. Raper's 48.91 inched out Goguen by .06 seconds. Montemayor and Ryan Shaw took gold and silver in both the 50 backstroke and 100 backstroke. Alex Roderick, Goguen, and Zach Zenteno went 1-2-3 in the 200 freestyle, as Roderick won with a 1:46.95 showing. Shawn Fujii won the 100 breaststroke with a 1:02.42 performance. Austin Barnard and Luke Christensen were the top performers in the 500 freestyle, as Barnard won with a 4:54.45 time. Ben Nussbaum won the 100 IM, logging a 55.76 to collect the victory. Montemayor, Nussbaum, Baldoni, and Crossen combined for a 3:31.80 in the 400 medley relay, winning the race easily. The 200 freestyle relay team of Ian Keane, Isaac Parker, Zach Zenteno, and Julian Morales combined for a 1:29.26 to touch first.
Seattle U men's swimming hammered Whitworth, 185-77, Saturday. Eight different Redhawks won individual races to lead the way on senior day at the Connolly Complex. Jack Baldoni, Julian Morales, Morgan Montemayor, and Ben Nussbaum were recognized before the event in SU's senior day ceremony. The group followed with stellar performances to close out their Connolly Complex careers. Nussbaum won the 100 breaststroke. The senior clocked a 59.93 to touch first. Nussbaum won the 200 IM with a 1:57.66. In the 100 backstroke, Montemayor and Ryan Shaw claimed the top two spots. Montemayor logged a 51.83 time. Baldoni and Shawn Fujii went 1-2 in the 100 butterfly. Baldoni swam a 49.04 to claim gold. In the 400 medley relay, the senior class of Montemayor, Nussbaum, Baldoni, and Morales teamed up to win the race. Austin Barnard won the 1000 freestyle with a 10:00.77 showing, over 14 seconds ahead of the rest of the field. Mitchell Crossen and Alex Roderick were the top two finishers in the 200 freestyle Saturday. Crossen posted a 1:43.94 performance to win. In the 100 freestyle, Crossen finished first, with Montemayor taking second. Crossen swam a 46.97 to win. In the 200 butterfly, Fujii and Taj Mercer claimed the top two spots. Fujii compiled a 1:57.90 showing. Greg Raper, Baldoni, and Ian Keane filled the medal stand in the 50 freestyle. Raper won with a 21.28 time. Roderick was victorious in the 500 freestyle with a 4:49.97. Raper placed second. Roderick, Goguen, Crossen, and Raper teamed up to win the 400 freestyle relay event.
Seattle U women's swimming was victorious at Pacific Lutheran, 154-89, Friday night. Seven different Redhawks (3-5) won individual events, led by Paige Treff, who was a two-time winner. Treff and Allison Plamondon were the top two finishers in the 50 freestyle, as Treff won with a 24.71 effort. In the 50 butterfly, Treff and Maddie Rapp placed 1-2. Treff won with a 26.46 effort. Bryn Lasher and Jayna Van Stone finished 1-2 in the 200 freestyle, with Lasher edging out Van Stone by 1.4 seconds. In the 50 backstroke, Jennifer Wong won, beating out Plamondon and Maddie Dickman, who placed second and third, respectively. Rapp took first in the 100 butterfly, narrowly outreaching Kaycee Simpson of PLU by .07 seconds. Emily Bakewell recorded a 5:27.20 to win the 500 freestyle, with Sherlyn Devadasontaking second. In the 100 freestyle, Van Stone and Lasher took first and second, respectively, as Van Stone touched first with a 54.77 performance. Madi Lydig's 59.89 time in the 100 backstroke was good for gold. The 400 medley relay team of Lydig, Margaux Thompson, Rapp, and Emily Goughcombined for a 4:05.61 to touch first. Dickman, Lydig, Jenessa Schulte, and Treff teamed up to win the 200 freestyle relay. It swam a 1:41.74 Friday.
Seattle U women's swimming cruised to a 173-81 win over Whitworth Saturday afternoon. Madi Lydig, Paige Treff and Darian Himes both won a pair of individual races on senior day at the Connolly Complex. Prior to the meet, the Redhawks honored their three seniors-Treff, Maddie Dickman, and Madi Lydig. Each senior took a turn in the spotlight Saturday. SU swept the top three spots in the 50 freestyle. Treff, Dickman, and Sherlyn Devadason went 1-2-3, with Treff touching in 24.21 to win the event. Treff's 53.56 in the 100 freestyle was good for first place Saturday. Lydig tallied a 5:03.72 to win the 500 freestyle Saturday. In the 200 freestyle, Lydig touched first with a 1:58.22 time. Himes won with a 2:32.49 race in the 200 breaststroke. Himes and Emily Bakewell were the top two finishers in the 200 IM. Himes won with a 2:14.62 effort. Bakewell and Jayna Van Stone finished 1-2 in the 1000 freestyle. Bakewell won by over four seconds with a 11:02.06 effort. In the 100 backstroke, Allison Plamondon and Jennifer Wong took the top two spots. Plamondon swam a 1:00.63 for gold. Emily Gough and Maddie Rapp placed first and second, respectively, in the 200 butterfly. Gough registered a 2:11.79 time. Bryn Lasher took gold in the 100 butterfly, with Gough and Rapp finishing second and third, respectively. The 400 freestyle relay of Devadason, Gough, Plamondon, and Lydig teamed up to win Saturday. Plamondon, Himes, Gough, and Devadason combined to take first in the 400 medley relay.
WYOMING
Wyoming Swimming and Diving men's team took down Colorado School of Mines on Saturday afternoon. The Cowboys defeated the Orediggers by a score of 173.5-83.5. The Cowboys were even more impressive, winning the first 12 races of the day on the men's side. Senior Slade Sheafferand junior Jack Herron led the way with two victories, each. Sheaffer posted the fastest time in the 100 backstroke of 52.51, and later won the 100 freestyle with a time of 47.52. Herron's first win of the day came in the 200 butterfly, beating the field by more than four seconds with a mark of 1:53.34. Herron later won the 500 freestyle, clocking a 4:42.52, this time beating the field by more than five seconds. The Cowboys placed first in the 200 medley relay as they clocked the fastest time with a 1:34.65, the team consisting of sophomore Sean Calkins, junior David Murphy, sophomore Jack Scafuri and junior Liam Metzsch. Murphy also won the 100 breaststroke, while Metzsch placed first in the 50 freestyle.
WAC CHAMPIONSHIP
The 2018 WAC Swimming and Diving Championship returns to Houston, Texas. Last year Air Force won its second straight WAC Men's Swimming & Diving Championship while Northern Arizona took home the women's crown for the fourth straight year.
