DENVER - Kansas City's Quinlan Moll and UT Rio Grande Valley's Paul May have been named Western Athletic Conference Men's Track & Field Athletes of the Week, respectively, for Jan. 9-15.
Moll, a senior from Springfield, Mo., made his 2018 indoor debut at the Graduate Classic this weekend, winning the men's 5,000 meter run with a WAC-best time of 14:52.68. His performance ranks him 35th in NCAA Division I at this point of the season. He also competed in the Kansas City's distance medley relay and finished seventh with a time of 10:36.83.
May, a junior from Bloomfield, Conn., set a new program record while winning the shot put at the Ted Nelson Invitational this past weekend. He out threw 32 competitors with a mark of 16.63 meters, which was also enough to put him at the top of the WAC leaderboard this season. May also added a 14th place finish in the weight throw out of 26 throwers after hitting a mark of 15.71 meters.
Other track nominees: Chicago State's Ricordo McKenzie posted a time of 6.93 in the prelims for the 60-meter dash and finished second with a time of 7.07… Grand Canyon's Ryan Girk ran the 200-meter dash in 21.83 for third place and a top WAC time as well as the 60-meter dash in 6.87 for fifth place and a top three WAC performance… Utah Valley's Brandon Edmondson posted the second fastest mile on the program's all-time chart with a 4:10.32 performance.
Other field nominees: Kansas City's Lukas Van Der Watt matched a season-best in the pole vault after clearing 4.91 meters to finish second overall and third in the WAC this season… Grand Canyon's Josh Hamberlin broke his own school record in the weight throw while he placed third with a throw of 16.40 meters while also placing fifth in the shot put with 13.87 meters… Utah Valley's Albert MacArthur set a UVU Division 1-era record in the triple jump with a mark of 14.48 meters as well as recording a 6.91 meter long jump both landing him in third place at the meet.
