DENVER - Kansas City's Chandler Carreon and Grand Canyon's Tarasue Barnett have been named Western Athletic Conference Women's Track & Field Athletes of the Week, respectively, for Jan. 9-15.
Carreon, a senior from Lake St. Louis, Mo., finished first in the women's 5,000-meter run at the Graduate Classic this past weekend. She sits at the top of the WAC leaderboard and is ranked 68th nationally with a time of 18:02.62.
Barnett, a senior from Kingston, Jamaica, leads the WAC in both shot put and weight throw after competing in the Friday Night Challenge this past weekend at Northern Arizona University. She placed fifth in shot put with a mark of 13.94 meters and seventh in the weight throw as she posted a 16.74 meter mark.
Other track nominees: Chicago State's Jocindra Glee produced a new school record with a time of 40.46 in the 300-meter dash while she placed first at the meet… Grand Canyon's Briana Myers ran an 8.72 in the 60-meter hurdles for the top WAC time this season as well as a 7.86 in the 60-meter dash… Utah Valley's Lexi Shaw beat her old program record in the 500-meter with a time of 1:15.33 while she also posted a time of 9.04 in the 50-meter hurdles, both earning a second place finish… UT Rio Grande Valley's Jennifer Zapata finished fourth in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 18:16.76.
Other field nominees: Kansas City's Christy Nell placed fourth in the pole vault, clearing 3.35 meters… Utah Valley's Mykah Ouderkirk placed first in the long jump with a mark of 5.30 meters.
