WAC Golfers of the Month Announced
DENVER – NM State's Mike McGilton and California Baptist's Erica Wang have been named Western Athletic Conference Men's and Women's Golfers of the Month, respectively, for September.
McGilton, a senior from Chandler, Ariz. (Perry HS), averaged just 71.7 strokes through six rounds for the Aggies. In the season-opening Gene Miranda Falcon Invitational, he fired a 5-under-pay 211 to tie for third among 92 golfers. His 5-under-par 67 in the second round is tied for second in the WAC for low rounds on the month. In his second tournament, he was a model of consistency, firing three straight rounds of 1-over-par 73 to finish tied for 32nd at the William H. Tucker Intercollegiate. His 71.7 stroke average in the month of September is over three strokes better than his career average of 74.94.
Wang, a senior from Corona, Calif. (Santiago HS), posted a pair of top-15 finishes for the Lancers in their first two Division I tournaments. At the USA Intercollegiate in Mobile, Ala., she shot a 4-under-par 212 to tie for 2nd among 93 players and lead the Lancers to a first-place team finish in their first NCAA Division I competition. She followed that up with a 15th-place finish at the Wyoming Cowgirl Desert Intercollegiate, shooting a 15-over-par 231 to help CBU tie for third as a team among 12 schools.
Other men's nominees: California Baptist's Ben Hallam led the Lancers to a pair of top-10 team finishes, tying for seventh at the Eastern Kentucky Intercollegiate and placing eighth at the Mark Simpson Colorado Invitational … Grand Canyon's Trevor Lampson tied for 12th at the Northern Intercollegiate and leads the Lopes with a 73.67 stroke average … Seattle U's Nathan Cogswell was the top finisher for the Redhawks in both September tournaments, tying for 25th at the Ram Masters Invitational and finishing 20th at the Husky Invitational … UT Rio Grande Valley's Alvaro Hernandez took sixth at the Battle in the Big Easy to help the Vaqueros tie for third as a team … Utah Valley's Jake Godfrey averaged 74.78 strokes per round in three tournament for the Wolverines.
Other women's nominees: CSU Bakersfield's Macey Mills was fifth of 59 golfers with an 11-over-pay 227 at the UNO Invitational and also finished 16th at the Wyoming Cowgirl Desert Intercollegiate … Chicago State's Felicia Davenport opened her season with an eighth-place finish at the Loyola Fall Invitational … NM State's Dominique Galloway tied for third at the Ptarmigan Ram Classic with a 2-under-pay 214 … Seattle U's Krystal Hu tied for 32nd at the Coeur d'Alene Collegiate Invitational … UT Rio Grande Valley's Tilda Green posted a top-20 finish at the Hobble Creek Classic, finishing in a tie for 18th, and also picked up a win in a match play event against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi … Utah Valley's Carly Dehlin Hirsch used a fourth-place finish at the Hobble Creek Fall Classic to lead the Wolverines to a second-place team finish in their home tournament.
