DENVER - UT Rio Grande Valley's Alvaro Hernandez has been named Western Athletic Conference Men's Golfer of the Week for Feb. 14 through Feb. 20.
Hernandez, a junior from Tenerife, Spain (I.E.S. Los Cristianos), claimed the top spot at the Atchafalaya Intercollegiate Championship to become the Vaqueros' first medalist since 2015 and lead UTRGV to their first team title since 2012. After shooting a 1-over-par 73 in the opening round, Hernandez used a 4-under-par 68 to pull ahead of the field. Despite a 3-over-par 75 in the final round, he was able to maintain the top spot and finish four strokes ahead of teammate Pedro Lamadrid. As a team, the Vaqueros finished with 17-over-par 881 to win the tournament by eight strokes over Jacksonville State.
Other nominees: Grand Canyon's Vinnie Murphy shot a 4-under-par 212 against a strong field at the John Burns Intercollegiate to finish seventh, his fourth top-10 finish of the season.
