DENVER - Grand Canyon's Jessica Gajewski has been named Western Athletic Conference Women's Basketball Player of the Week for Feb. 19 through Feb. 25.
Gajewski, a senior guard from Brisbane, Australia (Mountain Creek State HS), pushed her double-digit scoring streak to 14 games as the Lopes split a pair of important road contests. On Thursday, the guard put up 19 points to help GCU earn a 64-57 win at Seattle. Against Utah Valley on Saturday, she single-handily tried to keep the Lopes in the game, putting up 27 points on 10-of-13 shooting, including 7-of-9 from three-point range. She also dished out seven assists but it ended up being in a losing effort as Utah Valley earned the 84-64 win. The senior shot .630 on the week, including .643 from three-point range.
Other nominees included: CSU Bakersfield's Alexxus Gilbert put up a career-high 18 points in a 64-60 win at Utah Valley on Thursday … Chicago State's Phylicia Johnson scored a career-high 23 points as the Cougars narrowly lost to UT Rio Grande Valley, 69-62 … Kansas City's Aries Washington averaged 26.0 points per game as the Roos split home games with a win over UT Rio Grande Valley and a loss to NM State … NM State's Gia Pack led the Aggies to the only 2-0 week in the WAC, averaging 16.5 points per game and 10.0 rebounds in a pair of road wins … Seattle U's Alexis Montgomery posted a pair of double-doubles with identical 17-point, 10-rebound games against Grand Canyon and CSU Bakersfield … UT Rio Grande Valley's Quynne Huggins averaged 19.0 points per game and 8.0 rebounds per game in a road split … Utah Valley's Mariah Seals helped the Wolverines earn the weekend split, scoring 20 points with 10 assists in an 84-64 win over Grand Canyon.
