DENVER - UT Rio Grande Valley's Alvaro Hernandez and Utah Valley's Carly Dehlin have been named Western Athletic Conference Men's and Women's Golfers of the Week, respectively, for the week of Feb. 21 through Feb. 27.
Hernandez, a junior from Tenerife, Spain (I.E.S. Los Cristianos), earns honors for the second straight week after posting a second straight top-10 finish at the Colin Montgomerie Intercollegiate, hosted by Houston Baptist. The Spaniard opened the tournament with a 4-under-par 68 and finished the 54-hole event with a 3-under-par 213 to tie for eighth among 75 golfers competing. As a team, the Vaqueros took third among 13 teams.
Dehlin, a junior from Draper, Utah (Alta HS), picked up the first collegiate victory of her career at the GCU Invitational, improving by one stroke each round of the competition. After shooting a 2-over-par 74 in the opening round, she used a 1-over-par 73 and an even-par 72 to climb into the lead and earn medalist honors. Her strong play also led the Wolverines to take second as a team, just two strokes back of first-place Portland State.
Other men's nominees: Kansas City's Francois Lagraulet notched in ninth and tenth rounds at or below par this week, tying for 34th at the Louisiana Classics.
Other women's nominees: Grand Canyon's Courtney Vogel tied for third at the GCU Invitational, shooting a 5-over-par 221 … Kansas City's Cynthia Diaz tied for 34th to lead the Roos at the Rio Verde Collegiate Invitational … Seattle U's Keisha Lugito tied for ninth at the GCU Invitational, shooting a 7-over-par 223 … UT Rio Grande Valley's Michelle Moroles posted her first top-10 finish of the season, using a 13-over-par 229 to tie for ninth at the Islander Classic.
