DENVER - Seattle U's Joe Harvie and NM State's Pun Chanachai have been named Western Athletic Conference Men's and Women's Golfers of the Week, respectively, for the week of March 21 through March 27.
Harvie, a senior from Orting, Wash. (Orting HS), was the bright spot for the Redhawks at the Oregon Duck Invitational, shooting a 3-under-par 210 to take third among a strong field. His best golf came in the opening round as a 2-under-par 69 put him among the leaders. After shooting an even-par 71 in round two, he used a 1-under-par 70 to hold his position for his second top-5 finish of the season. Harvie finished ahead of three golfers ranked in NCAA Individual Golfstat rankings. His 73.8 stroke average leads the Redhawks this season.
Chanachai, a sophomore from Bangkok, Thailand (The Demonstration School of Ramkhamhaeng), tied for fifth at the competitive MountainView Collegiate with a 1-over-par 217. After shooting a 2-over-par 74 in the opening round, she fired a 3-under-par 69 in the second round to briefly take over first place before another round of 2-over-par 74 settled her into the top-5 finish. The strong week also propelled the defending WAC Player of the Year back into the top spot in the WAC statistics with a stroke average of 73.1.
Other men's nominees:UT Rio Grande Valley's Ali Khazanbeik became the second UTRGV golfer this season to win a tournament with a 1-over-par 217 at the Big Texan Invitational, also helping lead the Vaqueros to the team title ... Utah Valley's Blair Bursey led the Wolverines to a second-place finish at the Kingsmill Invitational, shooting a 3-over-par 213 to tie for fifth individually.
Other women's nominees: CSU Bakersfield's Ariel Lee shot a round-best 2-over-par 75 as the 'Runners lost a dual in a tiebreak to CSUN ... Chicago State's Felicia Davenport recorded her second consecutive top-10 finish with a 9-over-pay 153 at the Saluki Invitational ... Grand Canyon's Deanna Salvatori took second at the Red Rocks Invitational with a 9-over-par 225 ... UT Rio Grande Valley's Emma Mesta led the Vaqueros with a 23-over-par 239 at the Red Rocks Invitational.
