DENVER - Seattle U's Michelle Newblom and UT Rio Grande Valley's Ashley Pierce have been named Western Athletic Conference Women's Track & Field Athletes of the Week, respectively, for April 30-May 6.
Newblom, a sophomore from Reno, Nev., had a record breaking performance in the 100 meter hurdles at the Ken Shannon Invitational this past weekend. The record she broke stood for 42 years and fell as she won her heat. She placed fifth out of 15 student-athletes with a best time of 14.78 seconds.
Pierce, a senior from Las Vegas, set a new personal record in the hammer throw at the Tom Tellez Invitational this past weekend in Houston. As she placed third in the meet and produced a WAC third-best mark, she had a measurement of 50.69 meters
Other track nominees: Chicago State's Asia Johnson placed first in the 100-meter hurdle event with a time of 14.29… Kansas City's Malon Lee placed second in the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.16 and third in the 200-meter dash with a time of 24.67.
Other field nominees: Chicago State's Ayo-Ola Sobowale won the discus event with a mark of 39.81 meters and placed third in the javelin throw with a mark of 26.71… Kansas City's Jada Steele placed third in the long jump with a mark of 5.57 meters.
