2018 All-WAC Softball Teams Announced

LAS CRUCES, N.M. -
The Western Athletic Conference today announced its 2018 All-WAC teams and major awards as selected by the league's head coaches. NM State's Kelsey Horton repeated as WAC Player of the Year, while Utah Valley's Makayla Shadle was named WAC Pitcher of the Year, teammate Peyton Angulo was named WAC Freshman of the Year and the Wolverines' TJ Hubbard was named WAC Coach of the Year.

Horton, a junior second baseman from San Clemente, Calif., earns WAC Player of the Year honors for the second-straight year after leading the league in WAC games in batting average (.458), slugging percentage (1.146), hits (22), runs (20), RBIs (21) and home runs (10). She broke the all-time WAC record that she shared for home runs per game in WAC play at 0.67. Horton was a two-time WAC Hitter of the Week this season.

Shadle, a senior right-hander from Dayton, Nev., earns WAC Pitcher of the Year honors after leading the WAC in ERA (1.26) and strikeouts (33) and ranking second in wins (4) and opponent batting average (.210) in WAC play. She went 4-2 with a save in 11 appearances, allowing just eight earned runs over 44.1 innings pitched.

Angulo, a first baseman from Upland, Calif., earns WAC Freshman of the Year honors after batting .364 with five multi-hit games, three doubles and eight RBIs over 14 WAC games. She ranked tied for eighth in the WAC in league play in doubles per game (0.21), ninth in batting average and tied for ninth in hits per game (1.14).

Hubbard earns Coach of the Year honors after Utah Valley posted its highest WAC regular-season finish ever by placing second in the league with a 10-4 record after being selected to finish fourth in the preseason poll. The Wolverines won eight of their last nine WAC games, with road sweeps at Kansas City and CSU Bakersfield. Utah Valley also won its first series in program history over regular-season champion NM State.
