TWO NM STATE MEN'S TENNIS PLAYERS NAMED GOOGLE CLOUD ACADEMIC ALL-DISTRICT
Two NM State men's tennis players, Enrique Asmar and Stijn de Haan, have been voted to the Google Cloud Academic All-District At-Large team. Both will advance to the national ballot for Academic All- America® consideration. That team will be announced in June.
Asmar, a junior from Barranquilla, Colombia has recorded a 3.96 grade-point average as a civil engineering major. His overall record was 22-14 and 2-3 in WAC play individually. He was named to the All-Tournament team for both singles and doubles.
De Haan, a junior from Veldhoven, Netherlands joined his teammate as he posted a 3.90 GPA as an aerospace engineering major. He finished the season with a record of 17-18 and went 4-1 in WAC singles play.
In order to be eligible, a player must have completed at least one academic year, must be a starter or significant reserve, must have a 3.30 cumulative grade-point average and must have completed at least one full academic year at his institution. Voting is done by members of CoSIDA (College Sports Information Directors of America).
NM STATE FALLS TO NO. 4 STANFORD IN FIRST ROUND OF NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS
The NM State men's tennis team saw its season come to an end on Saturday with a 4-0 loss to No. 4 Stanford at the Taube Family Tennis Stadium in Stanford, Calif.
The Aggies (16-10) fell behind early as they dropped the doubles point to the Cardinal (22-3) who got wins on courts two and three.
In singles, the Cardinal got wins on courts four, five and then three to put away the match.
Senior, Christofer Goncalves was trying to fight his way back on the top court after falling 6-4, 3-1 before the match went unfinished. Junior, Stijn de Haan battled his No. 2 opponent but still dropped the first set 7-5 and was still working hard for a win as his match was retired with him down 3-2. On the sixth court freshman, Louis Menard also fell behind 6-4, 2-1 before the match was won by Stanford.
The Cardinal will next face Ole Miss on Sunday with a chance to move on to Winston-Salem, N.C. for the next round of the NCAA Championships.
KANSAS CITY FALLS TO NO. 8 OKLAHOMA STATE IN FIRST ROUND OF NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS
The Kansas City 'Roos women's tennis team's season came to an end on Friday as they fell 4-1 to the eighth-seeded Oklahoma State Cowgirls in Stillwater, Okla.
The 'Roos (15-10) fell behind early as they dropped the doubles point to the Cowgirls (20-4) who got wins on courts one and two.
The Cowgirls received their first singles point as the number four seed took down sophomore Yana Grechkina 6-0, 6-1.
Freshman, Grace Ball became the first ever female 'Roo to win a match in the NCAA Tournament as she took down the Cowgirl opponent in two sets 6-0, 6-1. With the win, she cut the Cowgirls lead to 2-1.
The Cowgirls got wins on courts three and one to take home the 4-1 win.
Junior, Katie Fries was on court two as her match went unfinished but had fallen behind 6-1, 4-3 before the match was called over. Sophomore, Thanushree Vale was also fighting her opponent on the fifth court but was trying to come back from behind 6-2, 4-1 before the match was complete.
The Cowgirls will next face Tulsa on Saturday with a chance to move on to Winston-Salem, N.C. for the next round of the NCAA Championships.
