UVU Garners WBCA Academic Top 25 Honor
OREM, Utah – (UVU Media Relations) The Utah Valley University women's basketball team landed on the Women's Basketball Coaches Association's (WBCA) 2017-18 Division I Academic Top 25 Team Honor Roll with the nation's 16th-ranked GPA, as announced by the WBCA.
Behind their academic recognition, the Wolverines finished the 2017-18 academic year with a 3.508 team cumulative GPA to sit among 19 Division I womens' basketball programs with a 3.5 GPA or better. The honor marks the ninth time UVU has made the esteemed WBCA academic list under head coach Cathy Nixon in the squad's Division I era.
"We've narrowly missed the academic top 25 these last few years and we are honored to be listed among the elite academic women's basketball teams in the nation again," said UVU head coach Cathy Nixon. "Commitment to academic success is such an integral part of who we are as a women's basketball program here at UVU. I'm very proud of the hard work and dedication by our student-athletes in the classroom to receive this well-deserved recognition from the WBCA."
UVU's national academic achievement comes on the heels of the school's top fall GPA (3.56) among all Wolverine teams competing during the 2017-18 winter. In addition, the Wolverines placed nine players on the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) All-Academic team this past year.
The WBCA Academic Top 25 recognizes NCAA Division I, II and III, NAIA and two-year GPAs inclusive of all student-athletes on their rosters for the entire season. The 2017-18 season is the 23nd in which the WBCA has compiled the honor rolls.
A team's GPA is calculated by dividing the total number of quality points earned by the total number of academic hours attempted by all team members in the academic terms (semesters or quarters) that the season spans. Weighted grades are converted to a 4.0 scale. The GPAs are rounded to the nearest thousandth of a point. Teams are nominated for the honor by the WBCA member head coach. A team must have a 3.000 or better GPA to be nominated.
