Grand Canyon's McKenzie Cook Named Senior CLASS Award Candidate
OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – Grand Canyon women's soccer student-athlete McKenzie Cook was selected as one of 30 candidates for the Senior CLASS Award, the organization announced today.
To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence: community, classroom, character and competition. An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School®, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.
Cook will graduate with her MBA in December. In just 2.5 years she graduated with her bachelor's degree in marketing and a minor in biblical studies and maintained over a 3.5 grade-point average. After graduation, she plans to pursue a job in the business field using her marketing degree or helping in a sales department.
Cook is a leader on and off the field. She is a team captain for the Lopes and fulfills her role through leading by example and addressing any conflicts within the team. Cook also serves as a student leader at her local church.
Within her community Cook continues to make an impact. Her main volunteering opportunities have been with North Phoenix Baptist Church. She helps with youth ministry throughout the week and with serving on Sunday morning. Cook has also helped with middle school, high school, and kids camps throughout this past summer.
Cook led the Lopes in points last season. She has started and played in every game the last two seasons. She was named first-team All-WAC in 2017 as well as being named to the conference all-tournament team. In 2018, Cook has tallied four goals and one assist for nine total points. She has placed 20 shots on goal in 826 minutes of play and was named WAC Women's Soccer Offensive Player of the Week once.
The 30 candidates will be narrowed to 10 finalists midway through the regular season, and those 10 names will be placed on the official ballot. Ballots will be distributed through a nationwide voting system to media, coaches, and fans who will select a winner. The Senior CLASS Award winners will be announced during the 2018 NCAA Men's and Women's College Cup® championships in December.
